OK Canada experts, I need help with this one.

I picked up a 53 set today. Is it a PL set or a mint set. It was in a Capital holder and a few of the coin are very nicely toned. It could use a trip to NCS to remove some of the haze. Opinions? I'll tell you what I paid later.

Looks OK. The moose looks a little hazy though.

Also looks like someone got their mitts all over some of those coins.

Is it a PL set or a mint set.

Looking at the nickel, I'd have to say mint state, thought it's impossible to really tell from the scan. I find the easiest way to differentiate MS from PL nickels is to look at the flatness of the letters and numbers in Canada and the date. If they appear flat, the coin is a PL, rounded, the coin is MS. A comparison against known coins is often needed.

The apparent die polish lines in the field behind the beaver on the reverse have me second guessing myself, though.

My inclination looking at the dollar is PL. But, I do not consider myself an expert in these matters.

    I like the set.

And, it wasn't that uncommon for sets from the early 1950's to contain a combination of PL and MS coins. So, it may be a combination of both.

Yes, and if it came in a Capital holder, there's probably no way of knowing if some of the coins came from different sources.

    I still like it.

Marty says they practically give Canadian coins away where he lives. I would be interested to know what he stole this set for. image

Ya, but that's pretty poor consolation for having to live there.

Nice pick up Marty. The silvers all look PL to me the 5c and 1c look MS.

What does NCS charge to remove the fingerprints and haze?
