Poll: If the internet disappeared, would your collection suffer?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
Obviously a follow-up to the poll on ebay, my first reaction was "of course my collection would suffer." In retrospect, resources on the internet allowed me to make contacts that have helped my collection flourish. Now that the contacts are in place, however, I can easily buy/sell/trade coins without the internet. Great collections were created in the past without the internet, and they will continue to be created in spite of it.

The knowledge gained on this forum, however, could not be as efficiently obtained without the internet. There are great web-based resources like the Heritage auction archive and articles on www.raregoldcoins.com (both of which I would pay to have access), amongst others.

I will answer "Maybe so." and see what the rest of you have to say on the matter.

My collection would suffer for I would nearly stop collecting if there were no place for me to sell duplicates etc. I would only ever buy a coin if I was sure I was going to keep it forever.

But of course!image I'm appalled at the mere thought of such a tragedy.

It would suffer. I would still enjoy coins but basically not be nearly as interested as sharing about them is a great deal of the fun.

  • No way. My collection existed for decades before the internet, and did just fine.

How would Louis Eliasberg answer this question?

Suffer. I don't have any local coin friends. I learn about coins on the internet. I look at potential purchases on the internet. I don't have many shows within 300 miles of me.

How would Al Gore answer this? His royalty checks would stop rolling in.

It would suffer, for the same reasons enumerated by mgoodm3. I buy almost all my coins thru David Lawrence, and my purchases are based on eye appeal. PCGS or NGC coins graded as MS-66 certainly don't all look the same. I hate dark, ugly toning. Gimme luster! Without the coin photos on line, I would be buying sight-unseen, and would probably be spending time doing returns.

I would still love coins, but I doubt I would have gotten very serious without the internet. eBay got me started again after a 10 year hiatus, but with Heritage, ANR, B&M, as well as many online dealers, eBay is mostly a thing of the past.
