Quite often, the "black" is actually a complex cornucopia of color, when looked at closely or tilted under good lighting. Although it is the ultimate color of silver sulfide toning change, it remains comprised in varying degrees of the colors that it went through to get there. Most of the coins that look black in images will actually be colorful in hand.

I thought I had a dark Morgan, and was reaching for the Jeweluster to dip it, but then I noticed something weird about it. The design wasn't right, somehow.

Maybe it's a pattern?

I'm a lousy photographer still, when it comes to coins

but, here is my 1903S Morgan. It's dark and has some good toning. My photo skills, or lack thereof preclude good pix, but I hope you get the idea

All of these confirm my belief that its better to have original coins rather than dipped 100% white ones.

I have some nice white morgans, but have to say that I think that 1903S above is my favorite. cant really tell from the pic about the toning, but that and the "darkness" gives it great eye appeal, IMO, and it's my favorite in my collection.
