The Cardinal Collection of Early Dollars to be sold...

DAMDAM Posts: 2,410 ✭✭
I just read, in my March 21st copy of Coin World, ANR is auctioning the Cardinal Collection in New York City in June.

What a great set!!! It's always been one of my Registry favorites.

That might be worth a $10 round-trip train ticket to see...

One of the great all time sets.

Maybe another sign of the market top?

Truely one of the great sets assembled! It`s no small feat that it was put together that quickly.

Mind boggling. The 1795 Centered Draped Bust MS65 is the most beautiful of them all, IMO.

I wish!!!! ... but there's a big difference in affordability between a $250k all time finest set and a $5M+ all time finest set! image

    Market top, anyone?

I think it's just the beginning of the bull for these great coins and sets ... but the values of collections are getting so high that the opportunity cost is just too great. And the cost to upgrade is immense ... one stops being a collector and becomes a holder.

I just hate to see these great collections fall victim to the rising cost of holding and upgrading! image

Kinda of a shame to go to all that effort to round em up then turn round and scatter em all over again.

My guess is that Cardinal will be very well rewarded for his efforts when the hammer falls.

    TDN:

Exactly the sentiments I just pm'd to you.

As prices rise, collectors are giving way to the investors. These coins are going to be sold mostly to investors.

Hello to the second phase of the bull market in coins. Prices are now escalating upward faster. The top is not quite yet in sight without binoculars but it is getting closer.

No ... the people I know that are interested in great sets/ coins such as these are collectors - but immensely wealthy collectors.

    Cardinal,

Congratulations for your accomplishment and contribution to the knowledge base. I read with great interest your post about how you drifted into the quality you chose. Here's hoping they fetch numbers that astound everyone. It's a good story you can tell for years. image

What a fantastic set! I am sure Cardinal has come to an investment decision that he wants to follow through with, but what a shame to trade away the Worlds finest set for mere paper when the World is flooded with Trillions upon Trillions of pieces of paper.

I tend to agree, Goldsaint. Paper money doesn't seem an attractive place to be right now.

TDN -"the people I know that are interested in great sets/ coins such as these are collectors - but immensely wealthy collectors."

Hmm, I need to be a wealthy collector. I have the interest, but not the finances. This is an amazing early dollar collection. Too bad there is not a picture of the 1794 AU dollar in the web link.

I don't believe that coin is in his set anymore. His NGC MS64 is worth drooling over.

The 1794 is MS64 and is not eligilble because it's an NGC coin. You can see the MS64 1794 Dollar here.

    It's a beauty!!!

Maybe he has to sell his collection to pay for the 1794 in mS-64?? Just kiddingimage
I was suprised to see that ANR will be the auction company selling his collection. I thought, the boys at Superior were very involved in helping assemble it?

You're right. I saw that 1794 PCGS AU58 on Superior's website yesterday. Wow! Curious thing, it's gone today. They only have the 1794 XF40 without picture today (pic was there yesterday).

“<< I tend to agree, Goldsaint. Paper money doesn't seem an attractive place to be right now. >>”

Each collector has individual wants and needs, and my comment was not meant to be directed at Cardinal, but wow what a collection to be sold in this market as inflation is rearing its head in all sectors. I am sure there will be many heavy hitters biding for these coins. In fact I wonder why one of the Billionaires or heavy millionaires has not made an offer for the whole set. I assume both the NGC and PCGS coins will go.

It also looks like the cherry picking has begun.

    Previously, I stated:

As prices rise, collectors are giving way to the investors. These coins are going to be sold mostly to investors.

    Then TDN stated:

No ... the people I know that are interested in great sets/ coins such as these are collectors - but immensely wealthy collectors.

But then some are agreeing with TDN's statement:

I tend to agree, Goldsaint. Paper money doesn't seem an attractive place to be right now.

This is exactly my point. The wealthy collectors have arrived and are buying because "Paper money doesn't seem an attractive place to be right now. "

Where were they when the stock market was booming and the coin market was in the doldrums? The first wave of these buyers we are now seeing is a blend of collectors/investors.

Fantastic set. I remember seeing up close and personal at the Long Beach show. I spent nearly an hour looking at each and every piece. Truly a first class set.

  • This news has really taken the wind out of my sail for us collectors. This is a set I thought would NEVER sell. Martin seems to have such a passion for these dollars - hense his research and his books. (P.S. If you do not have his books on the 1794 $, and Bust dollars, you are MISIING OUT!!).

I don't like how the market continues to go straight up, that the collectors are starting to bail out. It seems there are so many great sets (and great rarities) that have been sold in the past couple years - the changing fo the guards - it leaves me with an empty feeling.

I have a lot of doubles of stuff. I am beginning to think, "I don't have much time...". Darn, I wanted everyone to just hold onto their collections. image

    Lloyd,
Don't despair about transition. Sometimes it seems that there is an attitude change when a set is completed satisfactorily. It's really impossible to know why another collector sells but this wave we are seeing is nothing new. If you look back to the 1970s through the early 1980s, there were a lot of great auctions...like we are seeing now. I think the 1940s were similar too. Like you I've been surprised at seeing certain collections hit the market but then I see that most of my coin collecting friends, who seem to be in it for the long term, are happy to have a chance to acquire coins that have been off the market for a while, despite the higher prices. In fact, I'd have to say that their appetite was voracious.
