Just checked mine and all of them have the 1 lower than the 8. I'd like to see one though. image

The slanted dates seem to be quite common and probably for most dates don't carry any premium really. However, I believe yours also qualifies as a Near Date since it's about 2 denticles away from the point of the neck. Typically the date is 2 1/2 denticles away (I think). You have to pardon my lack of certainty because I haven't been VAM'ing for a little while and I'm away from the VAM book.

Im looking at the encylopedia of morgan and peace dollarsand it shows a pic of one on page 339. I listed as III 9-Ca (slanted Date)
    (189) I-2 R-3. not sure what all that means yet. rarity scale R-3 scarce (hundreds of thousands).

Hundreds of thousands is far from literally being scarce. Tons of Morgan years/mints are made up of a bunch of VAM's that divvy up each issue into hundreds of thousands per VAM. R3 can usually be interpreted as Common. R4+ gets a bit more interesting.

You can distinguish the close date vs the normal date by aligning the rt side of the "1" in the date, if the rt side aligns to the end of the 4 denticle, it is a normal date.

[edited] Now that I see you're picture for a second time, I think I'm right about his coin being a Near Date. It's not a Very Near Date but it appears to be 1/2 denticle closer than normal. I have to admit, for many in the collecting public that probably amounts to a big "Who the heck cares!" but there it is for what it's worth.

  • I think you're both right. Some folks are referencing the right of the 1 for the 1899 micro O. The 4th edition VAM book references the left of the 1 to determine date placement (page 115).
