Is a picture really worth a thousand words? Check it out....

I (being a newbie) was curious to see just how much of a difference lighting made when photographing. These 2 pictures are the exact same coin. One is under sunlight and the other under a $6. halogen lamp from Target. One picture portrays a "peg leg" Ike while the other, still the same coin, does not. Do you have any explanations for this? What about some similar experiences? Is a picture really worth a thousand words???? image

I've been imaging my collection for the past month with a just so so camera. I don't know much about photography, but the one thing I've learned is that lighting is everything. The type, wattage, direction, and angle will completely change the result. Your results are not surprising. Keep trying until you get a result that looks like the coin in hand.

The image on the left was taken under the artificial light (halogen bulb). The white balance is off. Look in the camera manual under white balance, and follow the directions on the preset (metered) white balance using a piece of plain paper. That should give you very accurate colors without strange hues in the image.
