What can you tell me about this coin?

This is a gold coin I bought on ebay.
What can you tell me about it?

(Old man) Look I had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was, “That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah”.

(Priest) BLASPHEMY he said it again, did you hear him?

  • Well, first off I am not an expert on these fractional gold coins, but I do believe that you will find the one you have is a fake. There will be more qualified people here later, but the "real" ones typically have the denomination on the coin, the fakes usually do not.
  • Can you tell me who some of the experts are in case they don't read this post?

  • Right off hand I can't name them....But if you will keep checking during the day tomorrow, I'll guarantee you will get some posts...Just keep bumping this to the top...(ttt)...eventually it will get answered....Sorry I can't be of more help. I am 99% sure it is a fake, but others need to chime in too...

I agree. I bought one very similar thinking I got a great deal. After I had it in hand I did some research to find out exactly what I had and discovered that I had a fake that was made in about 1972. Try this website: Mike Locke's California fractional gold page.

Here's one question on his FAQ.

<< <i>Q: I have a California gold coin that gives the denomination as 1/4, 1/2,
or 1 and has a bear depected beneath that. What is it?

A: You have a California gold souvenir token. These souvenirs
were made from about 1900 through 1970 and are usually gold plated brass. They
are valued from $2 to $80 (higher value for the early issue solid gold pieces).
Not all souvenir tokens from this period have the bear on the back, but all
tokens with the bear are tokens from this period. See my California gold token
guide for a listing of the varieties that I have seen. >>

  • Thanks for the link. I took a quick look and although I didn't see this particular coin or Token, you are probably right about it being fakeimage

Like I said not the first mistake i've made.

Looks like I could get a whole set for $7.50image

Oh well just laugh it off.imageimage

What you have is a replica of a California Gold fractional piece. It is gold plated and not made of gold. Woolworth's five and dime used to sell these for $2.00 each back in the 1960s. It's not worth a dollar IMO.

The "real" California gold pieces have a value on them "cents" or "Dol" or "Dollar." The presence of a bear and the fraction "1/4" is a give away that this piece is not authentic.

I'm not even a fan of the "real" fractional coins in this series, but I can tell you that this one is definitely no more than 30 or 40 years old.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • My THANKS to the group for the info. I'll take it out of the safe and stick it on the wall by the computer as a reminder.

As far as buying gold coins goes I'll stick with eagles (new ones) or maybe a maple leaf as I don't have one yet.
