What happened to the 2 year PCGS Collectors Club membership?

Two years ago I joined the PCGS Collectors Club as a Platinum member. It is time to renew my membership, but I can't seem to locate an option for a 2 year membership. The Platinum membership is about the same price (i.e., twice as much as the Gold membership), but the duration is only 1 year. I also note the Gold membership no longer has the ability to submit Four free submissions. I find this to be very disturbing. I could not find any previous conversation on this topic in this forum. Anybody else find this to be disturbing?

  • It used to be that there was a Gold PCGS Collectors Club membership that provided Four free submissions for one year (for approximately $99) and a Platinum PCGS Collectors Club membership that provided Eight free submissions for two years (for approximately $199).

Now it appears there is a Silver membership with NO free submissions for one year at $49.95; a Gold membership with NO free submissions for one year, but with a PCGS book at $99; and a Platinum membership with EIGHT free submissions for one year, but also with a book at $199.

I just renewed and went up to the platinum since the gold no longer offered the free submissions. Even though it's only a year you get 8 subs, a PCGS guide to grading book, and a printed version of the pop reports. I now have two of the PCGS guide to grading books so I guess I'll just put one on e-bay.
  • Yep. It was a buck seventynine, 2 years, 8 freebies. They offered me my renewal at a buck sixtynine a year ago October.

Yes, it changed, I think beginning of the year. Gold gets you no submissions, platinum is 1 year and 8 sumissions, I think. But at least it costs more.

  • I don't think this was a good idea for PCGS. I don't need the book, so If I have to choose between Silver and Platinum, I will just renew at the Silver level (or nothing at all). I really liked the two year membership.

I wonder if there will ever be a lead membership?

Well, I dug up my membership upgrade and in no uncertain terms is written that it is for a 2 year membership. I can produce it at the drop of a hat.

  • I have not renewed as of yet. I looked at that as well and said, "Hey, wait a minute!" I liked the two year option as well. I'll probably renew for the 8 submissions, but then will have to do it every year.

    That's obviously David's master plan.

I just got my platinum membership last year in Dec. Still good for 2 years before the price increase. Used my submissions on some raw morgans.

Ditto. The only real benefit for the extra $50 at Gold level is the grading book, which retails for less than that.

I like getting the grading book every year for all the valuable updates. As frequently noted on the forum, the grading standards seem to change due to mysterious factors beyond my ken, and without the updated grading book how would I know why the au58 coin mentioned in yesterday's thread ($36,000 bump) is actually an ms62? Anyway, I'll re-up at platinum for the 8 submissions.

My two year membership is up in May. As I see it, there are two options. (1) Don't renew if you don't submit anyway or (2) if you do submit, take the one year Platinum for $199 for the 8 submissions. Most of us have already gotten the book and the hard copy pop report is really not a big deal if you have online access already. There is a sense of "belonging" in being a member and being able to submit directly. Unfortunately, in this world, you must pay for the privilage. No doubt in my mind that if submissions go down at PCGS you will see some great offers from them to join the collectors club in the future. Right now it is pay up or shut up. JMHO. Steveimage

Pharmer, since when is PCGS upgrading the second edition every year? I have both the 1997 edition and the 2004 edition. Is there anything that would indicate that the book that PCGS is sending to renew is anything but the 2nd edition from 2004? Steveimage

    hey numonebuyer

isn't joining at the Silver level sort of like throwing away $50 since all it does is give you submission priviledges?? if you'll be submitting eight coins through the course of the year all PCGS is really doing is asking you to pay for those first eight in advance.

Steve, I said updating, not upgrading, and I nearly bit off my tongue, it was so far in my cheek. More money for lots less, plus a new copy every year of something that never changes, what a deal.

    Per your quote

    I stated

So, I may decide to select "nothing at all".

What a shame for PCGS to make such a change.
