I wonder if PCGS recognizes the few dates that have no initials like the 1918-D, which I might add is fairly rare above EF40. There are others.

Boss: "No problem. Get them on the dies now. And to make up for your mistake, you'll just have to hand engrave the initials on every coin that doesn't have them."

Normally the initials are incuse on the coin and raised on the die. If the die is over polished the initials are ground off and the coins struck from them have no initials. In the case of this coin the initials were ground off the die but a mint worker noticed the missing initials and hand engraved the initials INTO the die. Coins struck from this die show the slightly crude RAISED initials on the coin. It is not a mint error since the raised initials appear on all the coins struck from the die. It is more properly either a die variety or possibly a die stage if the die was used before initials were ground off.
