Have other dealers noticed how LITTLE "heirs" care about coins?

Looking at another thread:

Other thread

And I just can't stop remembering how LITTLE anyone seemed to care about inherited coin collections.

You'd START out like you were dealing with a CURRENT collector with something to sell and get out some current references and pretty quickly you'd get the "looking at the watch" or "pacing" routine.

Oh a FEW folks were interested in obtaining max dollars from the stuff, but MOST just wanted some money for the "junk" that Pops "wasted" his time on.

This of course does not apply to really serious collections, but it was apalling to see carefully selected and preserved and annotated collections of low to mid value coins (the AVERAGE collection) so cavalierly treated by the heirs who just wanted to get the whole mess over with and buy a new TV set or boat.

Anyone else notice this?

  • sad but true - kind of makes me want to sell all my coins and buy a new boat or tv set.

Yep, I've seen it too and am not really surprised. My interests are not my kids interests and in most cases they would be happier having the money to use for their own needs/interests.
"Let me tell ya Bud, you can buy junk anytime!"
  • Inherited a stamp collection.

I aint no dummy but the stuff is almost worthless and hard to sell.

I have been cherry picking it and converting the money to coins !

Heirs acting like that is what keeps a lot of brick-and-mortar dealers in business.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Hmmm - that's good strategy . . . mine would probably believe me too, because they already know I'm weird. image

It would be a really good idea if you all have specific recommendations in writing for your heirs to know what to do and who to do it with if you buy the ranch on a moments notice.

This subject is worthy of it's own thread as a lot of "heirs" don't have a clue ( why should they?) and get ripped pretty bad.

And do I really need to tell anyone that you can suddenly need quadruple bypass surgery, have a fatal accident, etc at any time thereby leaving your family seriously compromised?

  • I have walked out of more than one Coin Shop because some "Heirs" were getting "TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS" by the dealer. I know this does not happen everywhere, but I don't know how some guys sleep at night. I guess you could be callous and say that they have it coming to them for not doing their homework, but I think people still have to live with their actions, all around.

    My rant for today.

It doesn't surprise me, and I don't really blame the people. If I inherited a stamp collection, I'd try to put some time into finding out if there were any good items in it by reviewing a price catalog, but that would be it. Stamps bore me (sorry), and all I would want would be the money I'd get so that I could buy some more coins. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

So Stan, when you sell the coin are you going to inform the new buyer of the drool induced toning?

    BTW, very cute young-un
