image
Recently Rick Tomaska I ( RI Coins ) went through 30,000 clad Ikes,
and submitted Them for grading. He expects several MS 66 Coins, and no MS 67' s !!!

    If he submitted all 30K my thoughts are:

    1. I hope he got a volume discount on the grading fees;

    2. He should rent a U-Haul truck to deliver and pick up the coins since postal charges would be quite large;

    3. If all 30k grade in MS65 or higher, won't that effect the pops in such a severe manner that prices plunge?;

    4. If he did not get a volume discount on the grading fees, David Hall does not have to worry about coming up with money to make his house payment for the next few months; and

    5. Turn around time will take a hit.

    For clad Ikes.....
    I consider myself fortunate to find one good enough to send in out of a roll.image
    Downright lucky if you get 2!image

    It's not too unusual to go 3 or 4 rolls before fnding one I think has a shot at 65.
    I'm curious as to how many out of 30,000 rick felt were good enough to send in!image

    I recently went through about 500 in original mint set wrappers. Many were from unopened boxes. There was not one that could even have a prayer to make MS65. If Rick gets a handful of 66s he will be lucky.

    Agree with Greg on the toughness of these coins in high grade.

    I went through a bag (A dealer cut it open in front of me) and let me pick 5 rolls at $1.50/coin. This was in the late 80's.

    I still have those rolls, and they were the best of the bag. Not one coin makes 65. That's when i started saving all the nice Ikes i could find.

    These are tough and will stay tough, regardless of how many more are made in the pop reports. Yes a few more toughies will be made, but they will always be rare.

    I went through an unopened bag of 1000 '78-D's about 4 years ago. What a joke! 98% were MS63 or lower. Maybe one or two percent would have made MS64. Not a prayer of finding a MS65 anywhere in the joint. Since then, I've given them away as tips, presents, etc. Probably still have about 700 of the darn things left.

    15,000 mint sets.

    It's getting difficult to find quantities of these but it's still possible with a little time.

    CladKing,

    Is that a guess or did he really go thru 15,000 Mint Sets?
