Lull After Big Purchase--Anyone Else?

In late January, I purchased my first early dollar, a 1799 Draped Bust in VF25. Since I have not purchased anything (except a US Mint purchase). I almost feel this is a response to the large purchase.... thought's I've spent enough $ for a while.... hard too top without another expensive coin (while I certainly have much less expensive holes left to fill).

Has anyone else felt this after a big purchase?

    Yep.
BTW, are you gonna try to upgrade that one, Brian?

I would say this is definitely true.

Usually after I buy some gold material I usually take some time off.

A few weeks ago bought a 1892-S Barber Half for $275, which is peanuts compared to your purchase, but planning on waiting till I buy something else. Although I will probably be out searching for more Halves saturday.

Always the case. You buy a big coin, you're excited to get it, photo it, post it, and talk about it and then it goes in to the safebox... now what can I do??? If funds were unlimited, what fun this could be!!

Just bought a coin from a menber here that will put my buying on the shelf for at least a month. But I wanted that MS67 badly.

I wish I would stop after a big $ coin. I keep seeing coins come on the market that I want.

I take a lull also but inevitably something I've been waiting a long time for usually appears right after the big purchase. That's always the way.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Absolutely. My last biggie was in August. Just bought a few coins this week, for the first time since. Meanwhile, I had most of the collection home from the bank for pics, and spent a bunch of time editing and organizing the images so I can do a complete slideshow of my collection any time I want while they slumber peacefully in their deposit box.

I think this has a lot to do with the stress of a big coin purchase, and nothing at all to do with "funds," as some say. Certain of the more expensive purchases tend to be stressful -- a lot of rumination and second-guessing, haggling, negotiating, examining . . . only rarely do I find a big purchase qualifies as a no-brainer.

The solution may be to find an inexpensive "playtime" zone in the hobby. For me, that's modern conditional-rare business strike coins, plus some other modern crap like rolls and commems. Stuff that's cool to look at, toy around with, and keep out of the safety deposit box.

  • I had a lull from Novemeber 04 till this week. During that time, I saved for a coin show which disappointed. I used my residual funds (a couple benjamins) to buy an awesome coin off an awesome board member only to return that awesome coin for another coin from another awesome forum member! I'll be done till August after all this!

I hadn't bought anything since the October ANR auction until I got an 1807 Dime in MS 63 at Long Beach. I don't think it was a lull per se. Funds are scarce in December & January, so I don't pay much attention to coins then.

Plus, with the holes in my type set getting fewer and more expensive to fill, it is increasingly difficult to find suitable coins. I bought five coins last year. I could very well buy fewer this year. One or two expensive coins can consume my coin budget for a year.
