It was March 1, 1793. The chain cent was minted for the first time. It would be minted for another 11 days, ceasing after 36,103 were minted, on March 12, 1793.

Jeremy

PS- This is cool because today's my brother's birthday, and the 12th is mine image

I kind of remember that. Think I was to busy trying to invent the car so I could start collecting them before anyone so missed that story about the coins. Seams like yesterday.

I think your parents should present you with a nice f-12 Chain Cent on your birthday!

12 whole days of cranking them out.

If they would have minted for another 12 days more of us could afford one.

Not me! But more people. Great bit of coin trivia there.

My wife bought me one of those "chain cents" for Christmas last year. It was in a PCGS holder, but quite worn. It was only removed from circulation last year and it looks it. Still, it is a CHAIN CENT in a PCGS Holder.image
