Neat 1866 Shield Nickel from Burlington Show

VTCoinsVTCoins Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭
Went to the Burlington, VT Show this weekend and bought this cool coin:

Obverse Click Here

Reverse Click Here

The coin is a bit hazy and I only took quick photos. I may take the haze off and send it in to PCGS.

Really cool cuds on obverse and reverse. I'm not a big error expert ... do you guys think the cuds help or hurt the value?

Thanks!

Nice late die state!!!!!! I love the cud on the rev from 4k to 7k!!!!! To error collectors, get it slabbed and it will bring a mild premium.

Nice piece - the cuds and stuff might increase its value a little bit (and they give your coin some character). I'd get it slabbed.image

Sheild nickels are on the move! One of the most "classic" U.S. numismatic designs IMO. Very cool Timimage

I like the cuds & the die crack! It adds a lot of character! Unfortunately cuds are one of the things we don't always get to keep enjoying
when the O-ring overlaps the rim in a slab.

How are the surfaces? The coin looks a bit shiny, or is that just the pic?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

    << <i>The coin looks a bit shiny, >>

I was thinking the same thing.
  • Beautiful coin. Forgive this amateur question, but, is the cud you are referring to under "ENTS" on the reverse?

Cool cud, cool cracks ... image

but I wouldn't send it in ... looks like a BB in my opinion (from the picture I'd say 95% chance it's cleaned, luster removed ... too shiny)

Thank you to everyone for the comments.

Melmcbee ... yes, that is the most prominent cud on the coin. There are also cuds surrounding most of the rim on the obverse.

ms70, Cladiator and pursuitofliberty ... the pics I posted are cruddy. I'm pretty confident that the coin is original and will be slabbed. Probably an MS63, but I am hoping for an MS64. We'll see!

Wow! Cool coin. There were a few diamonds among the stuff there. Nice talking to you, Tim, BTW, and nice doing business again.

    Matthew,

Nice to meet you and good to do business with you.

I was swamped at the show! Nice turnout from the public. I'm glad Dieter Kaltz will be doing the show four times a year.
