Have you ever sold a coin that someone gave you?

I'm not talking about something that holds great sentimental value, but rather something someone gave you for whatever reason. Would it be wrong to do so?

I sold one my dad gave me for my birthday, but I didnt want to really. He told me he would rather me have a coin I like, and my interests switched. It was an awsome coin at the time, but like I said, It didnt thrill me much though.

All the coins I have recieved from grandparents I dont sell. Most just sits there.

I just wish somebody would give me a coin.

  • I've recieved a good number of coins from forum members... many I've sold, though there are a few that I absolutely LOVE and have great sentimental value to me because of the gift from a friend (Example Icon Coin) and that I would not sell, except maybe for 6 digits image (Example, Icon coin imageimage)

I've often thought about selling this "Monster Rainbow Toned" Franklin.
But you See Russ gave this to me (and paid for postage) so it would be tough
    to part with.

Russ is my hero and I don't want to offend him by making a killing off his most generous gift.
Thanks again Russ (stman wiping tear from eye.)

I haven't had that many coins given to me.

The ones that were are still a part of my collection even if they don't fit with my interests.

I just can't seem to part with a gift.

Yeah -- I've received a fair amount of what amounts to junk silver. I cash it in to raise funds for worthwhile numismatic coins. That's what they're giving it to me for, right -- for my coin collection...

  • When I was in college and needed money, I sold a some items that my grandfather had given to me (I had lost interest by that age). Now that I'm older, I'm trying to replace the ones I sold. They cost more now, but the ones I sold were not worth that much anyway. I recall selling some pretty circulated fractional currency and some tokens (not worth too much).

When I was a kid my older brother got me started collecting coins. A few years later he gave me several common date circulated silver coins. A few more years after that, during the summer of 1980, I sold the coins for their silver value and had enough money to live off of for the whole summer without having a job. I don't really regret selling the coins because the coins weren't really valuable, more like filler coins, and the price of silver has never been as high as it was that year. My brother was a little bit dissapointed when I told him though.

Sure I have. But I have not yet sold any given to me that I promised the giver I wouldn't sell.
  • No - and I am not lying - just send me a coin and I will prove it to you.

I sold my grandmother's 09S & 14D Lincolns but only because I bought higher grade ones.

I don't sell gifts and it would seem wrong to profit off someone elses good will.

I'll remember that next time I buy something from you....I will pay you in brand new, from the bank, nickels...and give you an extra one image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

When I was a little kid and silver dollars were more common, my dad would give me some all the time. He thought I was saving them in my coin collection. I was just to young to understand and spent them as just money. I did not sell them, just spent them. My dad is gone now and every time I look at a Silver dollar I remember how happy my Dad was giving me something he thought I would remember him buy. I do but feel so bad about spending them and wish I had all of them back. Maybe I'm just to sentimental, but if someone gives you something it may be that they think enough of you to want you to remember them. I've had several giveaways for YN's and hope they will always keep that stuff.

  • Yes, it's great. You start at zero $. It's hard to lose money that way and you can get something you like.

No. But then again, I've never sold a coin, period. (given a bunch away, though)

I don't see why. A gift means it's your's to do with as you please.
