I recently received this coin for evaluation for my 2-cent collection. At this point, I plan on sending it back. I need to find a decent 1864SM in VF-AU condition that has nice surfaces, no problems. This coin has: An obvious nick into the rim/edge of the coin (evident on the top reverse), soft struck "8" and "ust", and rough overall reverse (porous?). I've noted previously that finding problem-free 2-cent pieces (post 1865) can be very difficult, I still have holes from 1868-1871. It kills me to send a coin like this back: One...I prefer not to pay the post office the privilege of just moving a coin back and forth and Two...it's tough to find these coins in higher condition in any sort of decent shape. I must say, the outfit that sent me the coin is a class act, they sent me the coin for free (no postage from their end) and I only have to pay if I want to keep it. I definitely want to do more business with them. Plus, the dealer was honest before he sent the coin and said he wasn't thrilled about the reverse either but thought I should have it in hand to see for myself. I guess that's worth the price of postage ($9 for Registered Mail).
So what would you do, it this coin was in your hands for examination and you had that Small Motto hole to fill? By the way, the price is essentially a strong VF price (slightly above both the CDN and Coin Values VF prices).

<< <i>I find that "filling" holes only end up costing you in the future. Is there a "needs" to have this hole filled?
