Opinions on this toned 1925 Peace Dollar?

I discovered a new coin shop here in the Richmond VA area today. Wound up buying several coins, including this one. It just jumped out at me in one of his coin books, so I bought it. What do you all think of it?

I have a 1924 that looks just like that one. I was so impressed with its eye appeal that I set it aside from the other masses of Peace dollars I have for sale.

pretty color, not so sure about it being AU, I think its merely a weak strike...

AU? Based on what? Looks like a real frosty MS coin with crusty toning over the frost.

  • It looks 62 with a shot a 63 to me.

Grading Peace dollars has always gotten the better of me....but I was thinking AT LEAST 63

I'm looking at the break in luster on the eagle's upper wing and neck. That may be due to light wear, album wear, or may just be from rubbing against other coins in the bag. I'd have to have coin in had to decide to my own satisfaction, but since I'm feeling extra conservative today, I went with AU. (But a high AU) I still think its a nice coin.

That break in the luster is exactly in the spot where the luster would normally break due to wear on an AU58 coin. I agree with AU58. I have several just like that.

I think the coin is MS64.

Just to clarify, what you are calling a "luster break" is actually a dead spot in the lighting. You are looking at a photograph, not the coin in hand. I wouldn't buy an AU 25 Peace Dollar.

  • MS63/MS64...tough to tell from the pics, but it looks like a solid coin if the price was right.

Yep, I've said the same thing about coins I've purchased in the past. I wouldn't want that in AU, but I ended up with an AU58. Now I'm a whole lot more cautious. So, based on your picture, I come up with my guess. You're right, not in hand, it's a bit more difficult to tell.

I paid $28 for it. In my opinion, it's a very high end 63 with a good shot a 4.

  • I agree with K6's assessment that this is a very attractive, lusterous, mint state (64+?) Peace $1 with lovely original toning. I strongly disagree that he has the resolve to never buy a '25 Peace Dollar in AU!!image

A very fair price and one that would allow you to profit if the coin holders as a 64. image

    Here's my 25:

I think your strike is weaker, but it still looks like a 64.

I'm not going to submit this. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if it was graded 64, I don't think the cost would justify it.

By the way, and I neglected to mention this yesterday, the dealer has another 25 with the identical toning, and it is nicer than the one I bought. He's asking $50 for it.
  • I dunno the grade but I like it!
