Being outbid turns out to be good, but maybe bad, I don't know.

Earlier today I was watching an auction on E-Bay, which I bid on last night, for raw 1952-1957 Roosevelt Proofs. The coins were in 2x2 holders and I couldn't believe that the price was only $26.00 for the set of them when I placed my bid. I put my max in there for 50 bucks and just let it be. (Since really I was only bidding on the 52 and the others I'd have to sell if I won). So there's an hour left and I'm still the high bidder and no other bids have been made. I figure I have it won so I go out to dinner and do some other things. I get back to my computer and decide to check my e-mail. First I see an outbid notice, then the 'you lost' notice. image I was outbid with 45 minutes left but I got too confident and didn't pay attention. Damn. Oh well, that was my fault. I should have paid closer attention. So I have fifty bucks that I was ready to part with which I can now spend.

For some reason, I decided to see what Proof Dimes Heritage had up for auction. Much to my surprise, I saw this auction: 1950 PCGS PR66 Roosevelt Dime Even better was that it wasn't in the $200+ range. I put my max bid in of about 60 bucks and just let it ride. The auction ended a short while ago and I believe I won! The final bid was $57.00 for this Internet Only Auction, so it looks like I have the max bid. In the 'My Bids' section the total value of $66 (Including BP) was in green so it looks like I got it. The 1950 Proof Dime was the LAST dime that I thought I'd be able to get. It was actually very fortuneate that I didn't win that other lot otherwise I never would have seen this auction.

Now my only question is whether or not I'd have been better off spending that money on the previous auction that I lost. I could probably sell the duplicates here or on E-Bay and get that 1952 Proof for basically nothing, but what are the chances that I'd find a nice looking 1950 proof for a decent price again? These are the parts of the hobby that can get to ya. image Still, I got that 1950 proof and now the only two coins eluding me are the 1951 and 1952 proofs, but those won't be too tough for me. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

I think you ended up better, I like that dime especially for the price. image

I've discovered that on many occasions, not winning a particular auction ended up being a blessing... nice score!
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
  • Thank you. image Yeah, I think it turned out for the better that I wound up with the 1950 Proof instead of the 1952+Extras Proofs. Now I just hope that I actually did win. lol. It's hard to read whether you won the auction or not. (When I was the max bid it said there 5 bidders, and the 'wrap-up' says 5 bidders so I don't see how I could have lost). I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

  • Good good. I received an e-mail from Heritage and yes, I did win the coin. With S&H, the PR66 1950 Dime has cost me $72.50. Not bad at all considering the prices I usually see on this coin. image
