Got Grades, Low low low grades!

My economy submission came back on day 60 as follows. 8 out of 10 graded what I expected, I thought the 1805 half was a PO01, and I don't know why the 1854 10c got BB'd for damage - will have to look atthe coin whan I get it back

1 21848465 1836 H10C Large 5C USA PO01 - Yep
2 21848466 1838 10C Large Stars USA PO01 - Yep
3 21848467 1841-O 10C USA FR02 - Yep
4 21848468 1854 10C Arrows USA Damage - Damage? Looked PO01 to me.
5 21848469 1875-S 20C USA FR02 - Yep
6 21848470 1839 25C No Drapery USA FR02 - Yep
7 21848471 1853 25C Arrows and Rays USA PO01 - Yep
8 21848472 1805 50C USA FR02 - Come on, this is a solid PO01!
9 21848473 1859-O S$1 USA PO01 - Yep
10 21848474 1820 25C Small 0 USA PO01 - Yep

All in all, 1 new coin for my set (the 1839 Seated Quarter w/o Drapery) and 7 downgrades. Good submission results:

5x PO01's
4x FR02's
1x BB

Are the graders at PCGS laughing their asses off when they see that type of stuff come across their desks?

Their thoughts: "What is this guy thinking?"

Congratulations on a VERY nice submission that will no doubt be remembered by the graders for a while!
    When in doubt, don't.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • i love it! what is the set, registry? an ultra-low grade type set? would be great to see a dansco 7070 full of P-01, but i can't imagine you cracking these out.

nice grades! image shame you wont be able to *feel* them anymore. image

  • an ultra-low grade type set?

There are collectors who pay premiums for low-graded coins, like P01. And I imagine these are tougher to make than a lot of us think.

For some of you that haven't seen my set in awhile, its is a PCGS Registry set, specifically the Complete US Type Coin Set (1792-1964) which consists of about 135 coins. The set is currently 81% complete (rankled #4 in terms of completion %) with an average set rating of 1.94. Yes, the average coin is slightly less than a FR02 which would be a ranking of 2.0. Here's the Pocket Piece set which includes pictures of all the coins (except the ones I just added which are in route to me from PCGS): LINK

BTW, I do know of several collectors that have raw type sets of low grade coins - perhaps in Dansco or Whitman albums - and that includes coins cracked from PCGS holders - amazing coins like a 1907 High Relief cracked from a PCGS AG3 holder and a 1836 Goebrecht cracked from a PCGS PR6 holder! Isn't that a hoot?

If you take out the Gold coins from my set, the average grade plummets to 1.20 in the Copper Nickel set here which is 94% complete: Copper Nickel Set

    i agree.

being so new around here, i didn't know about Cc's set. i'm amazed. image

thanks for the link to the set (lots of eyecandy!), it's quite an accomplishment. i kind of figured there had to be a registry set associated with these 'great' coins. thought most P-01 collectors would be keeping them raw/cracking them for an album, but to step up and slab them all for the world to see, "way to go!"

    lovin' the eye candy! imageimage
