Anyone know how to price the "Freedom Tower" coins, I can't figure it out.

I know that this isn't a popular coin around here, but for some reason I want to get one. I was looking on e-bay and most sell for about $20-$40. However, these two are going for well over a hundred and I'm not sure why. I though maybe cause they were in a box but those still go for around $60. Anyone have any idea?

this one is at $200
auction #1

this one is at $100
auction #2

this one didn't sell
auction #3

What is the difference?

  • why in the world would you want this piece of rubbish. The only reason I could imagine is you hope to flip it and make a profit. You understand that AG of NYS already is putting the screws to these folks. I understand they have already uncovered what we all supposed anyway. that the metal from the coin was never near ground zero. wait a few decades and buy the commem that the US Mint will surely make someday.

I like the design and I collect what I like. But that's not the point. I'm just trying to figure out why some of the coins are selling for SO much more then the others.
  • Inexplicably, I have a sick feeling in my stomach. Gee I only lost 10 alumni from my H.S., what am I complaing about.

    Profiteering lowlifes, that's what! image
  • I agree....I certainly respect and support anyones right to have such a coin....but I can't think of a sicker, more dispicable scam. the answer to your question is people are bidding high in the hopes of flipping the coin for profit. i can't imagine why it has an allure to anyone.

Here's a link to the specifics, as alleged by our office, of NCM's wrongdoings.

And here's a link to our press release.

I don't think this is the case otherwise all of the coins would go for obscene amounts but it is just two of the 8 coins listed that are selling for over a $100.

This thread wasn't meant to be a discussion over the validity of those coins or why anyone would want one, but was to question why some are selling for hundreds of dollars and others for around $20.

As for why I want one is that is a very publicized coin that has been on the cover CoinWorld at least twice, and I think it is a good looking coin. So I thought I would pick one up.
  • Hmm. Well. Is there else you really want ? image

I don't plan on paying over $20 for one of these. I was curious to see how much they were going for, because I might pick one up, and saw the odd prices.
  • Well, what do the odd prices as you call them tell you as a collector?

That for some reason people believe those certain coins to be rarer then the others that are being sold, but I'm not sure why? Hence my original question. I thought someone on these boards may have heard something that would satisfy my curiosity.

I don't see why everyone is being so hard on this guy. He is asking a simple question: "why are some of the Freedom Dollars selling for significantly more than others?" By extentsion, he may also be asking if anyone knows of any varities of the coin that could to someone warrant paying five times the price that others are going for.

I agree the idea of how the coin came to be, and ESPECIALLY how it came to be sold is kind of disgusting; but it's also rather interesting - especially to anyone interested in legal studies.Cardinal Fan wanting to buy one or not for whatever reason he wants to buy it or not is certainly fine by me. Whether for its infamous nature and story, or merely because it's pretty. Isn't that why most of us buy all the coins we do?

  • << <i> I understand they have already uncovered what we all supposed anyway. that the metal from the coin was never near ground zero. >>

It is inconceivable to me that they would NOT use ground zero silver since tat would be an obvious way to attack these things. All they would have to do is buy one or to of the CU/PCGS "death coins" and hey would have had all the silver they needed. And I know they said they were looking into the source of the metal, but I've never seen any published results of their investigation. (I halfway suspect it hasn't been trumpted loudly for two reasons, one old news now that they are shut down in New York. Two, they probably found out that they did get the silver from Ground Zero via a death coin slab or other similar method.
  • I would like to buy one too. Then if it is ok with Jeremy, I'm going to donate it for his charity auction. Then there will be a good reason for it to sell for $100-$200. I'm not sure what price to put on them. Does anybody know what they were selling for when they first came out?

The unsold one you linked above was relisted, and didn't sell again at $30. You might want to email the seller and offer him $20 off-eBay. He may go for it just to unload it.

You really think that people who buy this crap pay attention to feedback?

Actually, I'm not sure. But that's all I could come up with especially since two others are now listed with bids at $200.00. Has the tempoary ban against NCM been lifted?

  • what the he:: is going on? am i in the twilight zone?

HOW COULD THIS GARBAGE SELL FOR SO MUCH MONEY?

i thought this thread was a joke about worthless cr::, but people are spending over $200 per coin and there is competition to win them. I checked the bidders feedback and they are buying multiple auctions for them.

I might email the buyer and ask why they are stocking up on them. can any one else answer me?

The people that returned them to Nat Col Mint are kicking themselves, they got burnt twice.

    WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
  • I don't know much about the coin but is it possible that some might think it will be a rare infamas coin some day. There has been coins in the past that no one wanted that ended up being rare.Who knows, maybe in a hundred years it will be the coin that everybody abused and threw away and there might only be a few gems.I doubt it but who knows.image
