Something different

I thought it might be fun to start a thread to illustrate that world coins do not have to be expensive to be interesting, attractive and fun. Post a picture of one of your favorite world coins or even bank notes or notgeld that was not more than the price of a common date MS64 Morgan Dollar (which is probably $45 or so...). I would start with a picture, but most of you know how impressive my skills areimage I plan to post some Notgeld from Bielefeld after I get some picture taken... lets see how many different and really cool items can be posted here...

Susan, I don't think that coin quite qualifies for the $45 limit 'kat posted. If so, I'll give you double for that coin. image

Jeez, just looked at the spreadsheet and out of the 140+ coins in my African Copper Type set (so far image), only 1 coin has gone over the $45 limit - that was a 1923 SA 1/2 penny that I paid too much for.

As for a pretty and cheap foreign coin - bought the whole proof set for this one for $15 (7 coins, 3 toners like this!):

A 22mm French 1842 medalet commemorating the death of the Duke d'Orleans, who succumbed to side effects of battle fatigue. Truly scarce -- less than 50 and likely fewer than a dozen made and was commissioned by one of the duke's close friends. I walked away with it for $11. image

1798 Republicca Romana - 10 paoli pawn ticket

    image

An Italian friend of mine wrote to say that this was:

"in effect a coupon issued by the roman pawn-broker agency ( Monte di Pietà ) which gave the coupon to someone that pawned something. The bill had a parallel circulation along with the official currency and at the expiring date of 11 september 1798, as it's written, the individual who possessed the coupon was entitled to get back the pawned item or an official 10 Paoli banknote."

At the time I bought it: $25; probably worth more now... image
