OT - I am really, really POed

Took the computer in to get it serviced, new virus protection, spyware removed, etc. One problem I had was when I tried to list something on eBay when I went to the 'change main category' I get knocked off the internet.

Well, I tried to list something tonight and once again I got knocked off. There goes $200 down the drain. This is really pissing me off, damn computers.

Have you tried the firefox browser? It sidesteps most of the usual probolems.

No it won't screw anything up. The only thing it will do is for sites like this you'll have to log back in.

It's actually a good idea to do these things from time to time as they clean up the junk in your hard drive. The temporary internet files can really pile up into the GB range.

Some cookies are useful but they are recreated during the course of your surfing.

You may want to download Ad-Aware and Spybot as well to get rid of adware and spyware that is on your system. They are free and easy to use.

Ad Aware and Spybot are a very nice 1-2 punch, each willl handle things that the other will not.
Once installed, periodically check for their updates, and use the "Immunize" function in Spybot.

Do you use the "BeSafe Online" product? Some other pop-up blocker? Sometimes that causes certain desireable applications to be blocked out inadvertently.

I've had this problem for about a month now. The only pop up blocker I used was installed today. I just tried to list again now, some result. Booted off the internet.

Maybe they set your privacy settings too high and it is not allowing eBay to set a new cookie.

Are you on dial-up? If you are that could be the problem.

I would noy trust adware or any program that expects you to run an active-x program. If you really want to make sure your computer is safe, buy the software from a store and install that along with any other program that will keep others from getting into it.

One other thing, if you have't defragmented the harddrive in a while do that. It is located in the start menu under accessories/system tools/Disk Defragmenter. -Dan

edited: You should not run an active-x program for a company you would not trust or do not know much about. Adware has caused my computer to work more gliche.

I seriously doubt that it's their problem. Does it only boot you out of the active window or does it shut down Explorer altogether?

No, but it will take a while. Run it while you are doing something else like watching TV or something that you can pull away from so you can check the progress every now and then. This will make your drive run a little faster. I do not think that that is your problem though. I would get a program to wash your hard drive and get a virus protection to stop it from happening.

It gets me back to the screen that has all the icons on it. I have to click on the internet icon to get back on the internet.

Don - it could be your ISP and their version of a pop up blocker. Try calling their help line.

Open at least two Explorer windows and try it again. If it only boots you out of the window you use to access ebay, I would suspect that you have some popup blocker installed that is biased to that site. Do you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 on your system? XP plus SP2 has a popup blocker built into it. If you attempt to try and access a "prohibited" site, then the window may disappear.

Yes, if that is the latest update MS told me to install. The problem started when I downloaded that from MS.

I tried the two windows thing before, it only knocks me off the one window that I try to list on.

Call Microsoft Tech support. This happened to me and they walked me through entering code to fix it. You could be on there for a while.

I have spybot and I am always unloading my temp internet files, disk clean and defrag once a week. I am thinking about the firefox though. Is there much of a problem going from IE to firefox?

I struggled to fix my father-in-laws computer until I was ready to go crazy--finally downloaded Firefox and everything works like a charm.

I suspect that the problem is SP2. I have had nothing but problems with it on One of my puters and have removed it. I run Foxfire on this one and have no problems. If you find that other problems occur "Uninstall SP2"

Also recommend defrag every month particularly if you are short on disc space.( Save time by defragging in "Safe Mode")
Go to PCPitstop an let them run a free test every month or so also to find potential problem areas and cures.
