All Time Favorite Sports Names

I know his name was probably manufactured in the University of Nebraska's Public Relations Dept., but has there ever been a better football name than Cornhusker running back I.M. Hipp?

Joe Theisman's family name is pronounced Theezman. At Notre Dame, he changed the pronounciation to rhyme with Heisman and the PR department went to business. Didn't work; Plunkett won.

Also back in the 60's, taking some literary license with the movie starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick, the double-play combination of the Phillies was referred to as "The Plays of Wine and Rojas".

This is admittedly juvenile. I can't be the only guy who wrote his name on the seating chart that the teacher passed around in high school. Without fail, one of us would write Dick Hurtz in the box for an empty seat. When the teacher did first roll call, he would generally say - "Dick Hurtz.....OK, who's Dick Hurtz?"

    Sorry, OT.

    Assuming nicknames:
Al "The Mad Hungarian" Hrabowski - baseball.
George "The Animal" Steele - wrestling. He ate the turnbuckle!!

But some revered one's - "The Slendid Spliter" (Ted Williams), "The Yankee Clipper (Joe D), "The Mick" (the Mick), "The Scooter" (Phil Rizzutto), "Hammerin' Hank" (Aaron), "Say Hey Kid" (Willie Mays), "Louisiana Lightning" (Ron Guidry).......could keep going.
