If it grades, scratches, I think it will grade slightly higher.

I would imagine it is a G4 candidate, maybe even G6. The hairlines would bodybag most other coins, but on a 1796 dime, I would imagine they're just par for the course. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that made it into a slab.

(PS- it does not look dissimilar to an ANACS G06 Draped half dime I used to own. Not that that means anything, but...)

    My gut reaction was AG03.
    When in doubt, don't.

That would've been mine, too, but look- there are denticles on the top of each side, fer cryin' out loud. It's just a wacky, uneven strike. (And maybe the coin is a little bent, resulting in some uneven wear, as well? My ANACS G06 1800 half dime was like that. And it was NOT net-graded.)

The coin is currently in an ANACS FR02 holder. The wear is uneven on the coin - that's for sure. The details are, where you can see them are better than the PCGS AG03 graded coin (which is pretty consistenly worn). I really don't know what to expect......

Given the wear patterns, I'd be concerned that the piece is bent or bent and straightened. As such I would not be shocked if this coin came back as a "no grade" (nice term for BB). Sorry. image

I'd grade the coin as an Fair -2 because of the partial date and sell it as such. I agree with ANACS, but then I'm a conservative cuss. image

The uneven wear is possibly due to the coin being bent. If PCGS didn't bag it, I'd be curious how thay could grade it.

Do they grade from the areas protected due to the bend or do they grade the areas exposed by the bend or do they grade the average?

If I were PCGS I'd have to BB it. You can't get a "generic" grade on this coin. The exception would be if the coin is not bent or was struck bent at the mint. This has been true in a limted number of cases, the best known being Type II gold dollars.

If PCGS does chose to do a net grade here, it would have to be FR-02. The reason is the only part of the date shows. You need a full date to get a Good with most coins, even the early ones. The only exceptions might be the Chain Cents.
