Modern Crap Question

I know that many people would find this question irrelevant, but I was hoping someone could help me make sense of the 2004 Clad Proof Sets. I was wondering ......Why did the 2004 Clad Proof Sets sell out prior to 2004 Silver Proof Sets (still not sold out). Arent the Silver Proof Sets generally more desired?
I look at 1999 & 2001 and the Silver Sets from both years have outpaced the Clad Sets in price. Isn't this unusual? I heard that the 2004 Proof Sets had low mintages, so wouldnt the Silver Sets have lower mintages than Clad Sets?

Could be that many people were just after the new proof nickels so they figured why pay more for the silver set?

Clad sets hit the market sooner, so more time for sales. Plus the silver sets cost more.

So there probably isn't much of a reason to buy a few extra in hopes of the price spiking slightly when/if they sell out?

The 1999 and the 2001 proof sets from what I hear, many were distroyed by the mint due to damage that occured at there storage facility...that is the reason for the increase in those....

I think the price will jump considerably once they sell out and in the years to come, it always does. The 2004 sets have those first year new nickels, as you stated, and those will be desired by PLENTY of people that like modern coins. From what I've seen, you can always at the very least get your money back, if not double it no problem.

Hello All,

For my personal collection, I only keep the clad type. I wouldn't buy the silver set now, because it "wouldn't fit in" with the initial sets. I'm not sure why people would really want the silver sets anyways; (I would think) the condition of the set and not the melt value would drive the price.

I always buy a few extra silver sets in case the price spikes and I can sell them. After they sell out there will probably be a moderate price increase, but I'm looking a couple years down the road.

The mint made a big effort this year to get the 2005 products out earlier in the year. They thought they made enogh of the 2004 clad sets to meet demand and stopped making them in order to start production on the 2005 material. They were way off in their calculations and ran out. That's my theory.
