Ebay auction for an 1889-CC Morgan Dollar in a 4th tier grading holder

Why would someone who knows about PCGS (the PCGS link tells me he knows about them), have a coin of this quality in that holder? At no reserve? Does the person really think someone with that kind of money would bid that high on the coin? I just don't understand....

There must be something wrong with it....

For example, it might be fake. The mintmark also doesn't look right to me.

It's AU and has been cleaned, that's why.

I'd guess he's not aware of the receiving limits.

    hey Tom

if you're interested in the coin, why not contact the seller and make arrangements for bidding on the item with some "contingency" attached to your purchase?? as a cleaned AU as Eric asserts, a final price in the area of $2000-$5000 seems reasonable if it's genuine and a coin you like and could live with. a quick look by ANACS would clear up any questions if the seller were willing to allow that and extend your return period.

Yep, cleaned AU. Still could be a bargain for someone if they feel confident about the authenticity.

Still, if authentic, it would probably get more interest in an ANACS slab, even if it was graded "AU details, cleaned, net XF-40." At least I hope so, but this may test P. T. Barnum's theory about a sucker being born every minute.

I agree with the others. This coin is a cleaned AU that has been AT'd to the dark gray color to hide the problems.

Coins often end up in "third world" holders for a reason!!!

I've seen this type of AT toning on other better date, expensive silver coins. Back when I lived in Massachusetts, a dealer had an 1804 quarter that looked very much like this, which was in an ANACS MS-60 holder. The coin had full Mint State sharpness, but it was this same color. I asked him why he had such a rare, high grade coin is that holder, and he explained that it had been worked on to hide a strong cleaning.

BTW a fair number of 1889-CC dollars do some DPL with a decent strike. The best one I have bought and sold was a PCGS MS-61. It had full mirrors on both sides, but quite a few marks.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I've had several eMails back and forth with the seller. He's a good guy who got taken buying the coin on eBay. He's going to be cancelling the auction and sending the coin to ANACS.

If you can't take CC's its best NOT to use the PayPal logo in your listing as all it does is confuse [since they don't read anyway] and piss off bidders when they find they can't pay with a CC. And you can take up to $10K at a time with a personal account as long as it is NOT for goods or services.

Which it automatically is when the winning bidder clicks the "pay now" button.

Which is why I said not to use the PayPal logo if all you have is a personal account.
