eBay Sellers: When would you NOT have a return policy?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
When would you state in your auction that returns are not allowed? How about if you're selling loose coins, like a roll of uncirculated (Morgan/Peace) dollars? How often and how dangerous are the eBay waters with "switcharoos" on returns (from buyer back to seller)? It would seem to me that it would be pretty hard to prove either way.

  • I have a return policy except on rolls. They are too easy to exchange coins.

No returns on bullion or unopened mint products.

I have a return policy on everything--no questions asked--for any, or no, reason. If I suspect a switcheroo (only have one or two times), I will politely refund but block the bidder from future transactions.

I've never sold it, but I suppose I might be inclined to have no returns on bullion. If someone bought an ounce of gold bullion from me and then within a week gold prices tank by $50 an ounce, well...

If I state in the auction a coin has been cleaned or whatever and I'm selling it raw I generally won't accept returns. I accomodate returns/complaints on a case by case basis. I don't offer a carte blanche return policy in order to deter the bid on approval crowd. Then again I don't put up much on eBay any more.

I don't do returns on original double mint sets anymore- too many people take all the coins out and don't find the monster toned MS67 coin they think they are going to get and then want to return it.
  • I've only sold about 20-30 NGC/PCGS walkers on eBay, but I specifically state in all that "PCGS/NGC coins are not returnable since the grade/representation is by these grading services and not by myself. Take the time to know how they grade coins before bidding." I don't hype what I sell. Here it is... buy it if you want it. All have been MS coins(except for a '34S & '37S in AU) at *No Reserve* starting at $9.99, so it's not as if I'm holding a gun to their head.

Album sets of raw coins (mint sets, dansco's etc.), bullion, items notated as being problem coins (some exceptions here), rolls, basically anything that could be subjected to a switcheroo.

I've also taken a couple of consignments where the consignor wanted $1 starts and no returns. I don't have a problem offering that format and recommend everyone to bid accordingly.

I don't get many returns, period, so I'm a bit flexible on certain items.

For the longest time I never even brought the subject up and never had a coin returned. Of course this was with certified coins but when I decided to move a lot of raw coins, I began to add a return priviledge with normal stipulations, of course, to help the buyers feel much more at ease.

I did the Math and my profit line with conservatively graded raw coins (by ANA Standards) is quite comparable, if not better in some cases than certified coins, what with grading fees and round trip registered insured postage to the tpg service and back factored in, of course. By the time all the fees are factored in, including ebay etc, many are lucky just to break even. Indeed.

There are times when it is to your benefit NOT to have coins certified. Think about it.image

One of my favorite eBay sellers received one of his very few negatives a few years ago from a buyer of his 1795 Draped Bust dollar. The buyer decided to clean the coin - quite harshly - before returning it when he saw he had botched the "improvement". Still, this seller's return policy is unchanged.

I've heard from other sellers peeved at buyers who return rolls after upgrading their collections with the choice pieces, but I think this is still not very common. I'd like to hear about returns on those infamous "sealed" late '50s - early '60s proof sets. Does the unscrupulous seller steam open the envelope to verify that the coins inside are no worse than the dogs he sent out before sealing them up and shipping them to the buyer?

When I sell a coin on eBay I require that the coin be returned in its unopened holder, which is pretty much standard fare for return policies. Good images and detailed descriptions have led to only a two buyers return coins to me in over five years. One was a friend who thought that the coin was AT although not discernable from my scan.

This is my poicy for the few coins i've sold to ebay buyers. Coin must be returned in its original, undamaged, and untampered-with holder as i sent it out. Email first if wanting to return and we go from there.

No, i'm not offering an approval service either. If I were to get the feeling that a buyer was taking advantage of my generous "no questions asked" return policy, I would deal with that situation if and when it happens.
