What if we limited the baseball HOF to 250 players?

You get beat - you are out. That way we could get rid of Haines, Lindstrom, Jackson, and all of the otehr Giant & Cardinal cronies. Might as well replace Drysdale, too.

People always are going to be turned over, no way it could be limited to a set number.
Pasted from Sandy's Hall of Fame Plaque:
SANFORD KOUFAX
"SANDY"
BROOKLYN N.L. 1955-1957
LOS ANGELES N.L. 1958-1966
SET ALL-TIME RECORDS WITH 4 NO-HITTERS
IN 4 YEARS, CAPPED BY 1965 PERFECT GAME,
AND BY CAPTURING EARNED-RUN TITLE FIVE
SEASONS IN A ROW, 1962-1966. WON 25 OR
MORE GAMES THREE TIMES. HAD 11 SHUTOUTS
IN 1963. STRIKEOUT LEADER FOUR TIMES,
WITH RECORD 382 IN 1965. FANNED 18 IN A
GAME TWICE. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER 1963.
CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER 1963-65-66.
Not good enough for ya heh?
He dominated, but only for a very short period of time.
I think dominating, and dominating for a lengthy period of time should be mandatory for HoF induction. Koufax failed to dominate for a lengthy period of time.
It is impossible to take a guy out, but it is very possible to prevent future mistakes.
to say "well McGwire hit more HRs than Freddy Lindstrom, so he goes" isn't a fair comparison at all.
Drysdale, Koufax, Plank, etc were all dominating pitchers in their times... but to directly compare them to say, Ryan, isn't right. Besides, ryan played for over 20 years, shouldn't that hurt him then? he didn't win 20 a year for 20 years.
if you want to kick people out, kick out the owners, journalists, commentators and others that never played.

They are your best source for HOF info, and before you go judging players and there career you should atleast learn about it. The Hof is for that generations greatest players, so there can never really be a limit since the game is constantly changing and differing. There are some mistakes (Tinkers/Evers/Chance), and some players that should be put in (19th century players, negro leaguers) but it is just all part of the lore.
Thanks,
Jon

My favorite Bill James book is his "Win Shares". I have read the ones on your list, too.
But, here is an idea!
Let's have LEVELS in the Hall of Fame.
Let's let the guy's that barely get in be on level three (ie Don Sutton, Gary Carter, Rollie Fingers)
Then, you have a middle level for rock solid starts like Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson, George Brett, etc.
Last, you have the absolute best of the best like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays. etc.
You would have to limit the top level to maybe 25 (?).
Any suggestions?
