i hope dennis someone can scan a copy for you it is a great articleimage

and with many price ranges collectors can get coins that are scarce and with much value and opportunity

  • I read it and thought it was a eye opening article. I buy a early proof once in a while but I have to stick with proof 63 and sometimes 64 in dimes or half dimes because of the cost. They are not that common and nice original proofs are a solid value IMO.image

I don't collect Proofs, but I read the articles. One of the authors is a board member (Prethen) and there's another thread about the articles.
  • I read it and found it very imformative. Since I am changing directions with my collecting, early proofs is one direction I am going to start heading towards. While some might not consider these coins since they were made for collectors only, they are true collectibles. Many are reasonable priced vs. mintage and when you can assemble a matching set, it really is stunning to see.

Hopefully, the market doesn't heat up -- at least for a little while.

The market has only heated up for early proofs during the same time period that all coins were super-heated up and prices skyrocketed. For the most part, early proofs are the "permanent" sleepers of coin collecting. Breen has noted it a number of times in his Proof book where he's amazed (in the '70's) that not too many people care for these coins. Well, in large part, most collectors still don't care. However, proof halves and dollars are a different story and have enjoyed some relatively high valuations (I do some comparisons in Part III of the series). For decent value as well as some awesome collectible coins, I go towards the smaller, minor denominations. What I find somewhat interesting is that something like Proof 64 3CN (pre-1877) haven't really seen any price moves in 3 years! image That's right....three years! I have a number of Proof 64's that have the 65 look but at a fraction of the price. The same goes for proof silver coins (this also is mentioned in Part III).

I realize these guys only have price moves based on supply and demand. It simply is mind-blowing to see such puny mintages along with relatively puny values. There is one thing that somewhat helps drive this situation and that is what appears to be lowball valuations in the CDN. For a couple of examples, look at Proof 64RB 2-cent pieces or Proof 64 half dimes. These prices have barely budged in years, yet it's been few and far between where I've seen (properly graded) examples of these go for anywhere near CDN bid. Proof Indian cents, 3CN, Shield nickels, Liberty nickels, etc. can many times be found selling in auction around Bid (and in some cases even less!).

I love the early proofs and collect them by series and type. I love the detail of the strike and mirrors. Proof indian cents are a bargain (shhhh.)

    Nice article.

    Michael,
I have been a fan of early proofs. I am not unhappy that I can buy coins with low mintages and special appearances for prices that I can sometimes manage. Someday, perhaps, they will have broader appeal.

Also take a look at this thread.

At the bottom of the above thread, I note that there's an accidental omission from Part 2. image
