1st question from the new guy. Ebay and other online?

Ebay, other online sellers, and sites?
Do most of you deal with selling or buying on ebay? Who? Has anyone been burnt bad on it? IS there any that everyone knows about (except the new people), that should be steered clear of? What about nameing some A+ sellers, and sites.
As for one company. I'm not sure how there pricing works. Got a catalog from them, their initials are LCC. Everything seems to be priced about double, to what I have seen elsewhere. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Never buy raw off ebay. Only slabs to begin with. I would suggest going to a local shop or show and looking around to get a feel for what interests you first. It took me a while to find what I liked, and a lot of money was spent on this and that which now I wish had been more concentrated. I buy and sell on ebay...nothing that expensive.

If you really wana try buying some raws on the bay, never spend more than you wouldnt mind losing.

Best bet for now is books, and seeing the coins in person and going with pro. graded coins till you can learn what to look for.

Buying on the boards is always helpful too...check out the BST.

  • Keep reading the posts and you will find out who to avoid and who is popular. Some board members are dealers and you can check out the Buy/Sell forum to see who's who. There are many, many posts on eBay dealers to avoid. Just type in Ebay in the search box and you're bound to get something. Never buy raw on eBay means you should only buy slabbed coins from reputable slabbers like PCGS, NGC or ANACS. I avoid PCI, SEGS, and NTC especially.

    Welcome!!

I would also add that a slab to avoid is anything "certified" that's in a Coin World holder. Anyone can buy these slabs empty and they usually label them with a deceptive similar name to a real grading company and try to pass them off as professionally graded. (e.g. PGS)

Here's a picture of what the holders look like. They are really nice in my opinion.

Try the quick search at the top of the forum. It will search only the forum
you're in. Use a single search word and go from there. LCC may be Littleton

I guess the questions I have for you are... what is it you want to collect? what kind of budget (ballpark), ie. is a $5000 coin out, in, or moon money?

    Secondly, study... study... study...

When you're done... study some more.

There are many exceptional coin gurus (I dont come close to them) in this forum that would be happy to help you and a number of top dawgs in the industry... it just matters what you're looking for.

    I hope this helps!

    and again... welcome!

So far large pennies have caught my attention, I have a couple now. I have a couple of Morgans, and Silver American Eagles, also. I think I am drawn to the size and weight of the silvers, and the era of the pennies.
I have been reading every thing I can. Just picked up a copy of the PCGS coin gradeing, and counterfiet detection book.

    MrXray,

Whatever you do, stay away from 1956 to 1970 proof, mint, and SMS sets on eBay. It's a rat's nest of nothing but picked over junk and you'll get burned every time.

  • avoid buying coins from the Far East. Buying non-slabbed is fine for cheaper coins. For rare coins, you might want to only buy them
    slabbed.
