What reference books would you suggest for a newbie that wants to learn about hard times tokens?
Are price guides available? Thanks in advance.

The standard catalog these days is from Krause Publications, by Russ Rulau.

It comes as a stand alone book, or you can buy a book that covers all nineteeth century tokens.

Your local dealer can certainly get it for you.
