Proof set VS Mint proof set

Need some help please. I bought a 1964 proof set on ebay thinking it was a mint proof set. It arrived in a Whitman holder with what looks like circulated coins. All the coins have marks and there is a print on the penny. What did I really buy? Is there a difference "proof set" VS "mint proof set" ? I have already recived positive feedback, but have not left any yet.

Thanks,

Dave

A mint proof set would generally be assumed to be one in the original celo with the envelope and inserts as issued. Sounds like you got a put together set done with leftovers. Did the auction have an image in it showing that the set was in a Whitman holder?

    Dave,

Yes there is a difference, at times image

Most of the time when someone says "Proof set" they mean "US Mint issued Proof Set".
However, it ("Proof Set") is also used to mean the proof coins from that year.

So, there are Capital Plastics and Whitmans, etc, out there that are not US Mint issued sets but instead are the proof coins from that year put together in an aftermarket, 3rd party, holder.

Sounds like what you have received.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

If you can post a picture we might be able to see if the coins really are Proofs. It's rare to see major marks on Proofs of this era. Usually it "environmental damage" or excessive dipping that does these coins in. If you did not get Proof coins, you should return it.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Lesson learned (inexpensive). Know what you are buying. Oh well I have a new paperweight reminder of that lesson. Can't do close up pictures yet, but I am working on that after reading past post here.....LOL

  • Hello,

It sounds like you received an "impaired" proof set. I think it's a little misleading of the seller, if I hear "proof set", I would expect original packaging, otherwise sell it as a (picked-over) proof year collection.

Dave, it sounds as if you might not even have (any type of) a Proof set. Did you, by any chance, acquire it through Ebay or another venue such that you could post a link to the listing?
  • Sorry don't know how to post the link. I have talked to the seller, he said he would take it back. I want to keep it as my reminder. He did not list it as a "mint" proof set. I did not know what I was buying.
