While I love coins and appreciate the history they represent, my first passion is sailing. Numismatics is something for the off-season.

I really wanted to vote for a couple of answers. I voted for the history. But I also agree with the beauty, I collect other things, AND it is a great family hobby.
  • Mostly the history-- but also really like the idea of owning a rarity
  • I want the children I don’t have yet and their children to thank me.

It’s nice to know that you have coins that fewer than 200 other people have out of the millions of other collectors.

For me history is #1, and beauty is #2. Rarity comes in #3, and the "investment" part is well back in the pack, except, of course for my business.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

You know something, I just don't know why I collect coins. I started when I was about 7 or 8 years old and just keep on doing it. That's been about 60 years now and no one ever asked me before.

Well, it's a combination of reasons, so I didn't vote. Also, there's a certain thrill in trying to cherry pick that's almost addictive. Plus if the world goes to heck in a handbasket, then I'll have a small silver hoard with which to bargin.

  • I collect coins because fossilized dinosaur dung collecting just got to be too expensive.

I did not see an "all of the above" so I selected other.
Personally, I enjoy the beauty of the older styles and the beauty of a good MS modern. The investment potential based on rarity is just a plus! Having something that few others have is another plus!
Participating in a hobby that others have done for hundreds of years before me is also a very rewarding experience. After all, those pre-1800 mint state and proof coins did not preserve themselves so someone must have taken care of them to insure that we in the 21st century could also enjoy them! This is a very old hobby that attracts me like a moth to a light. I don't really know why, I just really enjoy it and all the aspect associated with it!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • I enjoy the beauty of coins.

  • #1, Its Enjoyable and Fun! #2, All those other things that were mentioned already.

If it wasn't fun, I wouldn't collect coins. I have enough things in my life to aggravate me, I don't need a hobby to add to the aggravation.
