Do "flowlines" affect the grade?

I have a 1996-W Roosevelt dime that came back from ANACS as a MS65. I can't find a mark or blemish on it anywhere even under magnification. However, in the obverse fields there are very small ridges radiating outward from the center that I believe I have heard called "flowlines" from the striking of the coin(?). Do these affect the grade of the coin?

Thanks for helping me learnimageimage

  • Post up some good pics, I'd like to see the coin.

I just sent some modern stuff to ANACS as a "test" run. I did a bunch of research before submitting. Paraphrasing previous posts, ANACS is simply too low on their grades for modern coins, e.g. awarding PR67 cameo designations to straight-from-the-Mint 2002 proof commemorative coins that plainly are PR68-69 deep cameo material.

    Hi Vega

I have 2 Anacs holdered 96 W's one graded 64 (deservedly so) and the other is holdered a 65. The one in 65 would go 66FB in a PCGS holder. I think they may grade a little low at times on these and I don't think that the flowlines should affect the grade.

Severe die erosion can affect the eye appeal of a coin and thus have some impact on grade but for the most part minor obvious die erosion isn't considered. All coins have die erosion. My guess it's 65 due to marks you're not looking for or strike factors.

Yep, ANACS can be brutal on moderns. Sometimes they make PCGS look loose.

  • I bet it will get a higher grade @ PCGS. I've seen MS-65 SAE's @ ANACS which are really MS-68+ at PCGS.

ANACS is brutal on some moderns.
