WANTED: GOOD QUALITY STEREO MICROSCOPE AT A REASONABLE PRICE!

I have a question for everyone on this forum, and it is a serious question.

Does anyone know where I can find a good stereo or trinocular micorscope?

I will be in the market for one very soon, and I have looked at eBay, but didn't anything that would be considered "a bargain".

Recently, I have been taking correspondence courses from the ANA, and from the course on errors I was astonded on the different error varieties and also on counterfeit coins.

Again, regarding my question, it is a serious one, and all advice and answers will be taken into consideration.

  • I got mine off eBay. If you start looking elsewhere, these actually do seem like a "bargain".

I've had it for a year now and it has worked great.
I've only had one so I really can't give you a comparison perspective.

This is the same scope and same people I got mine from.

I wanted the range of magnification (i.e. 10X-20X-30X-60X) but I find myself using mainly the 10X & 30X.

Ralph, eBay might be my best bet. A while back I contacted JP Martin, former lead grader for the ANA, and I was advised that the magnification range I was looking for was 8-40X, so my best bet so far is 7-45X.

  • I also purchased one of these from the Ebay seller in Ralph's link. I got a 10X-30X. The transaction with this seller was good and the scope has worked fine. As Ralph said...as you look around these might not seem like a bad price!

Pacific Science Supplies has a table at most major coin shows. I sprung for a stereo 10x-30x model from them for $273 delivered, and I've been very happy with it. Don't know how I've lived without it, in fact. Every coin I get goes under it now.

I met with dpoole and lincolncentman today for a coin show & tell this afternoon (along with 4 other collectors). I can say that dpoole's stereo microscope is just awesome. The hishest setting zooms in on 2 numbers in the date - plenty of magnification for variety identification. Now I need to scrape up $275 to get one too!

  • I got this Cheap Microscope and it works fine - I use it every day to either look at coins or take photos. Which ever kind you get, you probably should get one with a Zoom magnification rather than several fixed magnifications. Good luck.

Yes you can - it is best to get a trinocular microscope (stereo microscope with an extra tube for mounting a camera (film, video, or digital).

Speaking of microscopes, I just got mine last week (trinocular, of course), and having a blast. No pics yet (got to learn how to take pics with the thing). Bargainmicroscopes.com has a good selection and friendly service.
