Nikon has some good rebates going on right now. You can get the 5 megapixel 5400 for less than $300 after rebate, and it has an excellent macro mode.

Thanks for responding to my query...boy you were quick! I tried creating a poll and it backfired on me. I'll recreate the poll later, but thanks for the reply to something that everyone else would wonder what the heck are you responding to!

I purchased my Coolpix 4500 second-hand from an esteemed board member for $500. It came with a 512 MB card and a lifetime technical support package.

I am far from expert, but my photography continues to improve.
