Question about coin weight for melt down value

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
Hypothetical situation:
If a box of silver coins (say 1964 Washington quarters) weights 5 pounds. That would be 80 standard (NOT troy) ounces of 90% silver content....correct? I'm getting confused when thinking about this because there's 12 troy ounces to a troy pound. If there's 80 ounces of 90% silver, I take it that there's about 72 ounces of pure silver. I don't have my books with me, how many ounces are in a 1964 quarter? Or better yet, how many quarters per ounce so that a fairly accurate estimate can be made for the number of quarters in 5 pounds?

    Washington Quarter KM#164 6.25 g 0.9 Silver 0.1809oz ASW

Silver price per ounce = 6.50 then US 25C .9 silver is worth $1.18
Silver price per ounce = 6.75 then US 25C .9 silver is worth $1.22

Depends on the weight of the box.

Just kidding....assume the box weighs nothing.

To elimate onfusion, avoid the Avoirdupois system of weight measurement for your gold and silver items altogether. Use either metric (grams Metric) or troy system (grains Troy).

I use Troy and it works well for me.

    80 x 28.8 x .9 / 31.1 = troy ounces /12 = Troy pounds pure Silver
66.68 Troy Ounces 5.56 Troy Pounds

    5 pounds (Avdp.) X 16 ounces (Avdp.)/Pound X 1 gram/0.035247 ounce (Avdp.) = 2267.9594 grams

    2267.9594 g/ 6.25 g = 362.8735 quarters

thus there are about 363 90% silver quarters in 5 pounds (Avdp.)

    "6.25 g 0.9 Silver 0.1809oz ASW"

Actual Silver Weight (ASW) is .1809 oz...Troy.

1/.1809=5.52 quarters to make a troy ounce of Silver. If silver spot is $7.00/oz., the equivalent face value in quarters to make that ounce of silver would be 5.52 x $.25 or $1.38.

Correction to my last post. $7.00 spot price of silver is irrelevant. It takes $1.38 face in .900 silver coin to make a Troy ounce silver. Rounding to $1.40 takes into account that there are some underweight coins in the group due to wear.

    Sorry for any confusion.

This would be the estimate I came up with: 360. Thanks for all the math. I have no idea why the concept of troy ounces vs. Avdp. confused the heck out of me.
