I'm at the point --- selling off and changing directions!

With Long Beach coming up I've been thinking about selling off a bunch of my collection and changing directions.

I'm just not sure which way to go. I need some help.

I'm thinking pre-1900 nicely toned proofs in collector grades. Perhaps starting a nice AU Bust half collection, maybe an early date set in circulated grades. Or I can do what everyone else seems to do -- an A box, but without a real collection in mind.

I guess I prefer the hunt and like the collection idea.

Should I just stick with what I know and try to upgrade the toned Peace $ set?

So many options, so hard to choose!!!

HELP!

I got in a rut and sold my collection this last year. Took it as far as I could. Am enjoying working on a type set currently. If you need a rare IHC, let me know!imageimage

Is that you are tired of your set, or just want to do something new? If possible, why not just put your peace dollar set away and start something else as well. But if they are actually starting to bore you, go ahead and off 'em, you've got a nice jumpstart on something else.

(and i think the AU set of bust halves is a great idea).

I have started an AU Bust Half set. At first I bought wildly...anything with a decent strike. I stumbled onto a nice toned 1812 AU58 that was just heads and shoulders above the rest of my coins. Since then, I've been trying to hold out for nicely struck coins with some attractive toning. It's taking longer, but the quality of coins I'm getting has definately gone up. It's a fun set and there's lots of coins out there for everyones tastes.

Can't go wrong with an Early Dollar set either. Good luck.

What you collect is obviously a personal choice, but I felt the way you do - got really bored with collecting by date. I put together an almost complete set of proof Indian head pennies, and liberty walking halves. But I pretty much sold all them off and have started a dansco 7070 set. That is much more fun to me. I really like type coins. The different dominations, copper, silver, different designs, all combine to make collecting much more interesting.

It's a good time to sell, I think.

I just recently moved out of Mercs and into a type set. The thing about a type set is that you always have coins to chase for your set. It was my experience with Mercs that a couple of coins would always be stoppers for me as my pockets are not that deep. But you have to choose what makes you happy. A type set will never really be complete, but you can define it as you choose depending upon your interests and your wallet.

    Happy collecting!!

In any case . . . . eye appeal. If it doesn't attract attention, question it's inclusion in your collection.

Here's something different: I take it you have a liking of Peace Dollars (since your ID is "TonedPeaceNut"). Why not start hoarding
high relief peace dollars? It would be pretty cool to have a collection of these in different grades. Besides, it's far cooler than hoarding

You've mentioned before the Draped bust halves by redbook variety before as a possible interest.
they're attractive coins, challenging but not impossible in mid grade "original"

  • Go with a type set, there are never-ending themes and the variety makes it a constant learning experience. Personally I love it.image

Type sets are nice ways to find new interests.

  • Thanks for all the advice. I like Type Sets and I'm currently finishing one off -- #6 20th Century Proofs @ NGC

So I'm going to finish that one up and I'm thinking about using the Morgan and IHC as a starting point for an 1879 proof set. Since I'll also have 3 proof Buffs I might do a complete proof Buff set as well.

But I'm really liking the early half dollars. There's just something about holding history in your hands. So many choices.

Now I just have to figure out what I want to sell. My A toned Peace $ stay though.

Nice un-molested Busties are getting tougher to find by the day. I search very hard for these.
I have managed to pick some up though, just haven't been posting them.
