My journey to a coin club in havasu, "Stamp & Coin"

Hello everyone! Today I went to a coin club where I live. I haven't been in one before; it was pretty fun going.

I'm 16, will be 17 this feb 13th! (Can't wait, that'll be almost a year Ive been on these forums!)

It took place in the library. When I arrived, I was surprised to see all elderly people. Every person there was elderly. If your experienced with coins, and you're ... well, elderly, you obviously have alot more knowledge. I met alot of people there that knew alot about coins. I brought my counterfeit 1900 ASE (yes, the year is 1900) there, and showed it around. It's my only counterfeit coin I have. I love looking at it; the people there seemed to like it to. Everyone was quite interested. I showed it around in break time.

This one man in paticular stood out in my mind. He was probably mid 60's, and I brought it out and showed it to him. I said, "It's counterfeit", then he replied, "Oh, I know! ..how'd you get it?", I continued, "I got it from a PCGS forum on the internet." He said, "Wow, really?" "Yeah people are really that generous.." . He said it was probably a die cast counterfeit. The crudest form. I told him it had been polished.

I met this other elderly lady. She had 3 coins. 2 of them were those old german silver coins (very large. There's a certain name for these type of coins; I happen to forget the name at the moment), she also had an ancient roman coin. I asked her how she got them, she replied, "In World War II, someone gave them to me." I thought to myself, "Wow, World War II? I wonder who gave it to her.." I then asked if she remembered who gave it to her, and she said she didn't remember.

* ********* *
I probably won't join the club. 2 reasons in paticular. It's hard to talk to and have conversations when someone is 50+ years older than me. This is a minor problem; I did enjoy talking to people there. However, the major issue is money. I don't have a job yet -- I've been trying to get one to use the money to travel to tokyo. As I'm learning japanese. The fee to start there (as a member) was $7.50. I didn't have the money. No doubt, I enjoyed my visist, but with money I do not have, that is too much to be a member and the fee assosoiates with me just visiting there. As I'd have to have pay the yearly fee ($7.50) to be a member and continue going.

They had auctions there. However, I didn't have any money to buy tickets. But nevertheless, I had a fun time. And that's what counts.

I have a novel idea............................try listening to some of these "older" people. No need to talk!!!

$7.50 a year is a cheap price for admission.

It ain't about you spouting your mouth, it's about learning what people have to say and the only way to do that is to disingage the mouth and open ones ears.

Try it, you may like it.

    image Mid 60's isn't generally considered elderly (except to teenagers) 70''s, 80's & 90's...now that's elderly.

GCL, in the past, your posts have made it clear you need mentoring. You may be surprised what you can learn from these old folks. And not just about coins either. They can teach you alot more than dates, rarity and values. They can teach you about life. and beleive it or not, you can even become friends with someone older than yourself...image You will spend most of your life talking, dealing, or working with people of different age mostly older than yourself, and by the time your older some teenager is going to call you elderly and you can share your life experiences with him. The circle of life (sorry, that's kind of mushy)

I would think that someone who collects gold coins, learning japanese and is going to travel overseas, could come up with $7.50? Isn't this the big tourist time out where you live? There has got to be some kind of job you can do and get????

Don't close the door on this opportunity...remember what you said...

    GCL,

We would all love to hear your definition of "elderly".

Of course, I guess it's fair to say that most "elderly" folks would call anyone under the age of 20 a dumbass so perhaps they have it coming to them.

While I can not argue that a trip to Japan could be very rewarding, I think that $7.50 is a small price to pay for the wisdom you could glean from these "elderly" people for an entire year. Can you ask your parents for an opportunity to earn that money? I'd pay my stepson more than that just to ask image

You should try to join the club. You might be surprised how much you might learn. A few months ago I decided to get more involved in my town and charitable works, so I joined the Lion's Club (my father in law is a member). Much to my chagrin, the average age is about 75, but they are looking for younger members to keep the club going. I surprised myself on how enjoyable it is talking to some of these older folks (although I found that I have to talk much louder than I'm used to). We also had a Christmas party in December, and not only was I amazed at how interesting some of them were, but also with how the old guys all drink the hard stuff, and I was sipping a Merlot with my pinky extended. image

I don't know where you live but around here, Chicago area, there are at least 2 or 3 coin shows every month. Most are free. No cost to get in. There are a few shows a year that area really big and there is a charge to enter. These are the international shows. I try to go to the free ones at least once a month. Yes there are lots and lots of us old people there but also some younger generations. The older ones should spend some time teaching and creating a coin interest in younger people and get them off the computer games. I give proof, uncirc sets and coin books to friends and relatives for Christmas so someone will carry on.

Also consider that $7.50 in Japan won't get you a smile from the girl behind the counter at Starbucks.

I also take exception to being called "elderly". I prefer "old fart".

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read the last paragraph. Sounded like a request for assistance, especially coupled with the bit about the generosity of the PCGS forum members!!

GoldCoin: Consider this. Your signature says that the value of your collection is $780. Therefore, the $7.50 membership fee is less than 1% the value of your entire collection! I think the membership fee is pretty low, considering. You're almost 17.. do you have a job? Most likely it pays around $7.50 an hour. You only have to work one extra hour for one week to cover the cost. I too learned a foreign language when I was your age, and travelled abroad when I was 14 and again when I was 22, (I'm only 25 now) so I can understand the need to save money. I think you can afford this membership fee.. it really isn't a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

Honestly, it was fun in its own way. It was fun talking to the ladies there about their coins. I'm sure my parents would help me out this time with the money; it's no problem. The most knowledge I got was during break time, going around and talking to people. They start out with the prices of the dollar and gold spot prices, they also go over all the different coin shows in the area. So that is helpful to me. The vast majority of time there are auctions of the low end coins there, and doorprizes being handed out if you win with the raffle tickets. Of course, this all cost money so in order to get money for a raffle tickets or auction I will get a job (And I'm working on that. No prob.)

I'm still thinking in joining but honestly it was just hard for me to be in a group of elderly people when I'm only 16. It made me feel really stupid, and just uncomfortable. Any advice on how to get over this anxiety? I guess just keep going there?

Perhaps I could just go there being a guest twice, and not have to pay. Plus, it's only once a month or so.

I went to a coin show in Frederick, Maryland last year and the promoter said I should check out the PCGS forum. He said the people on there were friendly, generous and informative. He did not mention their average age.

I joined it but there are a lot of elderly people on it. Not that there's anything wrong with old people but they don't play video games or have short attention spans. Heck, some of them actually are honest and have values.

Anyway, I went back to a show in Frederick and heard the elderly show promoter complaining about not having anything to drink. A few other elderly men bought him some bottles of Pepsi to drink. I talked to him about some pretty mint sets from the 1950's he had at his table. I wish I could have bought one but they were a couple of hundred dollars and I'm kinda broke.

I wish I could support the people I meet at the shows here by buying their coins, but I am a student and plan on traveling to Baltimore and learning how to speak English better. I've been busy riding my skateboards an snowboards and hoping to make it on the X Games.

Plus my friends might make fun of me for hanging around with people who talk about history and financial information.

    Hey RickMilauskas,

I also live in Frederick and I've been to the coin show there. The "elderly" coin show promoter is Mike Dixon. The guy is in his late 40's! Poor Mike.

Apparently you've missed his past posts, we do all know this young man, as he's chosen to share a great deal about himself - from his stories about beating his mother, to taping bottle rockets to a rabbit and lighting them off in preparation for a job at NASA (This is my favorite one), to his dire need to inform us all about how sad and downtrodden he is (Woe is him), to the endless amount of times he's begged for free coins and whatnot.

It seems Kevin (GCL) Has this reputation on a multitude of forums on the internet.

Please also allow me to quote, from his own website...

    << <i>NASA
Well I sent in my applicaton to NASA a while ago just like I said. For the past week I have emailed the person I sent it to and tryed calling them to see how my applicaton went. I got an email back from them that sad something along the lines of we will contact you about it and please stop asking about it. I am hopefull

Bob is back on the PC forums. I am not sure how to take that. I was rather happy being the person everyone talked about and know it is Bob. I am sad

I really hope I did not mess up my chances to get to Nasa because I kept emailing them and calling them, I really want to get in. I am hopefull

In preperation of getting into NASA I bought some bottle rockets and duck taped them to one of my rabbits. I made all the fuses into one and tried to launch it to see how far it would fly. I even got some of that saran wrap and made a parachute for it so it could land. I didnt work out like I planned. I burned my rabbit and my parents were upset. I am sad

I really want to get Warclaidhm back. I miss being able to play. I here their are animeted dead now. I really want to see how they satnd up to me. I am still tring to get back. I guess I will see how that goes >>
