Thinking ahead: Chicago National

The last time I've been to the National was in 1984 when it was in SoCal (if I got my year right) and I am thinking about going this year. After reading the experiences at last year's Cleveland show, I have a couple of questions. If I were to go for a day and a half, which day(s) would be better? Do I understand that one can get a VIP ticket that can get you in the evening before the show starts? Would that be better to do or perhaps would it be better to wait until the last day and a half? What I would be interested in buying (I would bring a great deal of cash with me) would be raws and graded for my sets, as well as graded cards for the Sampler Set I am wanting to begin (and wanting to get discounted pricing). I have heard conflicting stories as to deals/selections/etc. so I thought I would ask these questions to see if it would be worthwhile to plan. Thanks.

Attended Thursday, Friday and Saturday last year looking for both raw and graded.
My original thought was that the best finds would probably be made on the first day.

Made a full sweep of the hall each day and a funny thing was
that on Friday and Saturday I found both raw and graded stuff that hadn't been out on display the day before.

So, I'm not sure it matters when you're there, just be there as long as you possibly can. image

All plans are for me to be there this year as well along with a couple of my cronies from Lincoln, NE to share the ride to Chicago.

I know I will have to battle all of you for any of the vintage golf items that may be on the card show floor! image

Looking forward to the Luncheon and meeting some of you all there.

I go on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday and Thursday seems to be the best for me. All the fresh inventory is out and available to those who find it first. Fridays are usually a dissaster for me. Three times the crowd and I find myself walking in circles. This could be because of the lack of sleep and the Crown and diet Coke is starting to wear off or it could be tired of the same scene???????
As far as great buys being discounted....... this is not the show for that. Seems like most of the dealers are pretty set with their prices regardless of what day it is.

  • Since I live in Minneapolis, I am planning a road trip to it this year. However I am currious as to the amount of hockey that is at this show. In particular Early 70's and early 80's. Anyone have any idea?

    Thanks,
    Darren

Not a lot of hockey at the National. The one in Cleveland had probably no more than a couple decent dealers. Best bet is the semi-annual Toronto shows - albeit those are a little bit longer a drive image

    Next one is in May.

  • Thanks I will keep that in Mind.
  • We made Toronto in under 8hrs. one year from Boston. Of course we were pushing 90 mph. Well worth the trip for us hockey guys. Bob
