I've heard from toned dollar specialist dealers that some dates are virtually impossible to find with "killer" toning. Perhaps some guy with a lot of patience and very deep pockets with put one together, but the odds are against him. Or he might lower his standards and declare that a so-so tarnished piece has filled the hole.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I'm starting to set aside some nicely toned Morgans which I feel are pretty, when I can find them for reasonable money, as nice examples of toned Morgans. -- i.e. crescents, rainbows, textile, etc.

there was a member here that had a great toned collection with links to his registry set pictures of each but I don't remember if it was complete
If you go to the TCCS forum boards you may get a better response to this question as some big time toned dollar collectors/dealers seem to hang out over there
<< <i>Morgans --- that's gotta be a cakewalk compared to doing a complete TONED Peace $ set!!!!
I heard that guy FrattLaw was just 1 coin shy -- 34-S of a complete set. He's gotta get a couple with better color, but overall he's basically done!

Actually a Complete toned Morgan set is MUCH more difficult - there are more toned Morgans available, but they tend to be 79-S -> 82-S, 83-O -> 85-O, 84-P -> 87-Ps and once past those common dates it begins to get quite difficult, with several of the dates in the 90's virtually unobtainable - not to count the 86-O & 89-CC - No, a complete set of nicely toned Morgans is/will be very difficult - when complete it would be a "Sight" to behold!

either one!! have not heard of one but depending on what you consider toning I doubt that a complete set even exists. have never heard of a toned 93-s 92-s 84-s 95-o 89-cc in mint state.
<< <i>I wonder what happened to that FrattLaw guy? >>
I heard he was last seen with IdahoGirl at the last Long Beach show and was never heard from again. Something about her showing him her Bust collection.
I hear she has mystical powers over men.
Much like GSAGUY has mystical powers over monster toned Morgans. Once he gets his hands on them -- they are never to be seen again as well.
What's the multiple these days for toned Morgans?? Or is that too simple??

Tim - really depends on the toning - there's some that adds "negative" value - Your 87 might be "multiples" of sheet - it would just depend on how "eye-appealing" the toning and the coin are. But if you want to dispose of that 87, you can send it to me and we can get out the calculator (let's see 3 times $48 = $144 - yeah, that ought to do it )

Yeah, if one pretty-but-AT-as-hell-and-also-holed coin counts as a "set".
I finally found a Morgan I liked for the Holey Coin Vest. AT as hell, but pretty. (On a holey coin, who cares, anyway? It's all about how nice it looks on the vest, and this one looks very nice).

That would be Toneddollars, and it is not complete yet. He has been doing a great job with this set, slowly getting some of the tougher dates that are showing up with nice toning.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.
I have been working on my set for quite a few years. I am trying for a set of 107 coins, as of this point I have 19 more to complete my goal. Really I think I'll never be done as I will always trying to upgrade existing coins to a better color or whatever. I have a link at the bottom of this page to my ngc registry set which shows my collection to all who are inclined to look.
As for Bill Jones comment about toning, beauty is in the eye of the collector. What floats my boat may not float his, and visa versa.
No toned 1893-s? Take a look at the Vermeulle 1893-s that graded out at MS67 and fetched around $450K raw in 2002. I thought the coin was a MS68 as it had no real flaws anywhere. MS67 was a strict grade based on surface preservation. I cannot recall even seeing an 1881-s any cleaner than that coin, but then again I don't spend much time looking at MS68 and 69 Morgans. That 93-s had lovely pastel toning in many attractive subtle colors. I'm sure a nice toned set is possible in nice MS63 or higher. If price is not a concern it could be done, all dates included. Don't give TDN any ideas though. The only place he can go from where he is to bust or Morgans.
Back when I started out on this journey, toned dollars were a lot more reasonable. Now even the common dates cost big bucks. Also there ere only two or three collectors attempting this. Now I know of at least ten people trying to put together this set, all toned.

I'll think about it.... Got insomnia again??
I've done a PCGS Registry Morgan Mint-mark toned set (but it's only 5 coins )
Since Morgans were only minted at Denver in 1921 it is the hardest to find with nice toning.
