The second. I love circulated cameos. I bet the fields have a real cool look, too. Oh and the other has that cleaned look I dislike.
  • #2. Much better pic and it shows no cleaning. #1's pic is all yellow and could be hiding stuff.

It is hard to beat that "Old Coin" look especially when the surfaces look free of any marks or nicks.
  • #2 for me. #1 looks cleaned to me.

I prefer #2...although it appears to have a touch more wear than the first coin, I think it has the perfect 'look' for an original circulated coin.

I like the look of the second one, but the first has significantly more detail, so I would buy that one. (Actually, I would use a pic of the first to drive down the price on the second.)

i'd buy the first and hope it's an overdate. it looks like there's something going on at the second "8" but the picture isn't the best quality. i will say this much, it's clear to me that the color on the first picture is way off and the coin won't look anything like the yellow/gold in the picture, just like the second most likely isn't as dark as that picture.

I actually like both, but if I could only get one I would buy the first one...not the overdate, (hint: if you think you can see an underlying 5 on any 1818 quarter you are wrong-I have never been able to find it on genuine 1818/15's.) but it looks like a Browing-6, a R-5 die marriage.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Both look great, but I would take the top one as it is not quite as dark.

  • Until I read keets' reply I'd have said 2 as well. But looking again, he's right. It sure looks like there's something going on with the date. The picture's horrible though. The second has a nice original uncleaned look, but I guess if I were taking a chance on something, I'd go for 1 too.

  • Coin number two.

I'd rather have the first one. Could easily be some kind of scarce variety as has been pointed out. Although it may have once been cleaned (conserved?) it looks to have nicely retoned.

Second coin is nice but I say first one for me. I think the spacing between the numerals of the date on the first is kind of cool... 1 81 8...

Give me Number one please. Better quality coin and like Keets said, the color is all off in those pics. Look at the background of both the obv and rev pics- I too bet the coin is much nicer in hand - and the possible die variety isn't too shabby either.

The only difference that I can see is the lighting. I think they're the same coin.

Very interesting responses. Let me say that they are not the same coin. Number one has a better technical grade, but number two has a great original look. The picture of number two sucks, I know, but it's probably been cleaned at some point, but it has re-toned pretty nicely.
Let me also say that number one isn't to my knowledge an overdate. I think it's a B-10, not a B-6, but I'm not positive on that.

I'm not sure which one I like better. Certainly the cameo contrast on number two is hard to beat.

Blowing up the reverse photo of #1, I can bearly see the die crack through the 2 so it is the B-10.
