Which set should I start with? What are your favorites? I am not one for most of the modern stuff, with the exception of a few players I collect, but the Heritage stuff is too sweet to ignore. I didn't want to hijack the 2005 Heritage thread, but the excitement you guys have for the product is infectious, and after getting a few, I can see why.
I look forward to your recommendations.

Take your pick!!!!
Kevin
I like that series the best, with the first (left hand) one the second.
I see boxes of the 2004 heritage on ebay for about $60...is that a fair price for a box of these?
like that will never be put together again.
Kevin
yes the cards go in order of the years they represent...52,53,54,55. Topps sent out surveys sevreal years ago and asked if going in
order would be important..I think they actually wanted to skip the 54 set! Its a good thing collectors spoke out. Fleer and UD have
stolen a few of the designs, but the topps sets always are the best.
60 is very good. 2004 heritage is still affordable. The great thing is every year at this time the other heritage sets and singles go
up in value as more and more want to jump the wagon. I will sell all my cards one day, maybe even soon, but my heritage sets will
always stay with me and then to my kids
Kevin
The 2001's (1952) are beautiful as are the 2003's (1954).
Kevin - Those autos are off the charts!!! I feel my arm bending.
Are boxes at all reasonable for the 2001's?
included the best of todays players and the best of 1952.
Every year the red autos are hot and sell for more than book value. I had to pay 85% of book for the last card in my set (Duke Snider) but
you just do that when you do sets.
Kevin
E.g. #28 in itself was an SP - I believe it was Sammy Sosa; the #1 card came as a common Thome where the figure in the background was fielding and an SP where in the background the figure is batting.
I know that is complicated but that is the beauty of the set. So, after you do the complete set, then you can start considering the inserts and the corresponding chrome set. The basic chrome set - this year they will be number to 1956 will probably be 110 in total. Very hard to complete - I still haven't finished last years due to procrastination.
Well guys, this is getting exciting just thinking about it.

were also team cards which might be cool. Cards one and two were league presidents...hmmm
You can almost guess that cards #'s 5,15,20....will be short prints. There actually might be a checklist online..hmmmm

Mike/Kevin -
I am late getting into the presell game, but I see prices in the mid $60s for a box (2005s) and a little under $200 for a 3 box lot. Decent prices or can I do better?
Thanks for the info thus far
Chris
If you can get a guy to sell you a box for 60$ or even 3 for 200, that is excellent - the presell was at 60 and if you knew the guy, maybe a little discount. After the wax went live last year, the store near my house was selling for 70 and the next day was up to 95$!!!
So, yes, if you want hobby, jump in at that price.
But the fun is in hunting for the blister boxes at Target, Walmart and whereever - you may see them at Toysrus stores also.
Good luck

<< <i>I pulled a Campanell Ebbets Field Seat card and told him it was worth a thousand dollars. >>
Yes on the retail for 30 bucks/11 packs and hopefully 1 SP per pack again. As was said before, jump in and buy early if you want a chance at an auto - it seems the deeper we get into the cycle, the more slim the pulls get!

the blister 11 packs x 8 cards per pack and a traditional 36 pack?
Which has been people's results with each? and is there a preference?
I had no idea that Heritage made it to K-Mart, Walmart, Target, etc...
I have all 3 with in 10 minutes of me, including 3 Targets. I may have to go make friends over the next few weeks.
Kevin - Thanks for the lead with Kulhmann. I will take your advice and PM him.
I smell an "official" Heritage thread in the works, only about 2300 posts behind the Nolan Ryan thread.
<< <i>So there are two flavors of boxes:

Axtell
The money is in the blister boxes - as I said, last year there was one SP per pack! And of course you get one pack free. The retail 36 box gets "searched" and picked over - even if you can get the whole box, I have had bad results with them - At Target, they are required to open the 36 ct. boxes before putting them on the shelf - so you don't know what you are getting - perhaps a combo of two left over boxes - that have been picked over.
Chris
Kuhlmann is a good guy - I bought my case from him - I believe he is sold out - but worth the contact.
If I can be of any help guys, please don't hesitate - for a vintage guy, I am nuts for Heritage!!!

Mike
PS: if you sell on ebay - you can flip some of the autos and inserts for good money early on - and some individual cards - no lie - a guy put his Andy Pettite card up since it was the first card with him as an Astro and sold it for 20 bucks!!!! We're talking about a buck card at best? Also, if you want to make money with a complete set - sell it immediately while it is hot - if you wait a few months, the frost will set in and it will not command the money you think it should. Having said that, as modern goes, this set holds its value and you can still sell the SP's years later.
Mike -
No doubt I will take you up on that. Other than the cards being great, and having that vintage flair, what I look forward to most is the one thing I haven't done in 15 years....... TRADING!!! Exciting times are a coming.
There are several configurations to look out for:
hobby boxes....everyone knows these, at pre sell these are the best deals. You will probably at least for a few days be able to beat the
retail price of 72 bucks...remember tax if you buy at target and wal mart!
retail boxes:
these fall under several different kinds
Walmart boxes will hit the earliest and contain the big cards. They are sold in 24 count boxes and you can buy one pack at a time, which if you
can keep an eye on it and open sometimes that is best and then abandon the box when the good cards are pulled. I often buy a few
at a time and see what happens. If you are sure that they box was full when you started then the odds should be easy to figure out.
Target boxes....are taller boxes with only two rows versus the WM boxes which have 4. Early target boxes are also very nice and I have pulled
Arod autos both in 01 and 02 from these boxes.
29.99 retail boxes....these have 11 packs in them, which makes them less than 2.99 a pack. You know they are not searched just make sure that
they have the topps wrapping on it, back in 01 these were bought, opened, searched, and then re-wrapped and returned. If this product
gets hot look for the same thing to happen.
Toys r us blister backs...Sold one pack at a time for the same 2.99 price, these are more searcher proof than the loose packs, but you can
cut your hands up pretty good ripping into that plastic...I have a few blood stained cards to prove it. I havn't seen these in a few years
but back in 2001 they had 4-7 short prints in each one.....keep in mind that the common sp is 5 bucks! Thats like getting 30 bucks in cards
for 2.99 in every pack! lets hope they return!!
Again, if you can secure hobby boxes for less than 72 bucks then that is the way to go. There are big hits that you won't find in retail....cuts
sigs 1/1, and the felt pennants. Plus you won't have to pay tax like at the retail places. If you do go retail then buy early. If you have doubts then
wait to open them and see what is coming out. Every since they have come out the retail packs always seem to be loaded with sp's but
very few autos. If you must, hide the cards around the store so you always have something to buy (I didn't tell you to do that), these will
sell out fast!
These are very fun rips and the thrill of the chase on the sets are well worth it. There are plenty of options the least of them just buying
everything you see. If you chose to go conservative, then there are plenty of guys here ripping and so you will get your set done, and best
is your doubles are easy to sell on ebay or trade. You can even be like one unnamed heritage guy here and put a set together very quickly and
then sell it for great money early on ebay and then pick up a cheaper set later on. Me, I can't sell something Ive put that much time into.
Ill also suggest the old style 9 pocket pages and a good 2 inch binder. I put the valuable cards and all the sp's in penny sleeves first. I also
keep one pack from each year unopnened and put that with the set. They look nice on a bookshelf
wow..you think I work for topps or something!
GOOD LUCK
Arthur Shor...urrrrr

Then came the last 3 packs my local Wal-Mart had.. Bought them and pulled a Ernie Banks Signature numbered 18/55.
East - You and the others are definitely helping me shape up my game plan; hit those stores early and often. Also, that Banks pull on your last pack is tremendous. Akin to hitting a walkoff HR in the bottom of the ninth.
This is going to be a long 2-3 weeks to wait on order to get our 'mits' on this product.
I am trying to scratch up enough cash to go ahead and put in an order for a case, already have 3 boxes ordered. Would love to get a case..
Spahn in my first box in 2001 and I have been hooked every since.
Topps has added in some not so hot autos and usually the team topps are commons but this year there is suposed to be a mystery
star..hmmm

edit: for those who don't buy much from Target or Walmart - check the blister boxes and insure the shrink wrap is tight and that you can see the topps logos printing on the plastic since some on occasion will steal the good cards and rewrap the box!
Again, start checking the shelves at Walmart about a week later.
Now, last thing - last year we found a ton of cards with horizontal indentations in the cards - more than just a few - I sent in a total of almost 200 cards! I did not list the cards, so I got random replacement - I sent in zero SP's and got back 45! So when it's time to talk replacement - what I do is take the stars and SP's and ask for specific card replacement by listing them on the request and not with the commons.
And what ever you do, don't get the SP card blues! Help will be on the way!

The black refractor bonds would probably be a great pull. im guessing over 150$ on ebay.
Can you PM with your distributor information? I've been working with a couple, but one doesn't have topps authorization and the other tell me their entire first order has been spoken for.

<< <i>13 days and counting...how many are on the Kuhlmann bandwagon??
JS >>
Trying to hop aboard, but if not, I will figure out a way to at least get a box. I could always camp out in front of Walmart!!!!
It's great to see everyone getting excited about the product. What does everyone usually buy? A box? Few boxes? A case? Would you even have a shot at the set, including SPs, buy ripping a case?
Great stuff... keep it coming

Anyone seen John Basilone around??
JS
I was meaning to ask John. We traded on both heritage sets last year. This year I didn't do the Bowman set. Did you?

Mike
Where are you? I went to HS outside Tyler, and Im in College Station now.
Another dumb question... What boxes did the president sigs come from? Have these been all accounted for? Or are there some still hiding in packs, that haven't been weighed and sold as "hot packs"?
Thanks,
GG
PS: I love Texas, I was pissed i spent 2 weeks in houston late december and just missed the tri-state show. maybe i'll time it better next time. I can hear it now "Where you going hunny?" "ugh... to a card show." "you planned this vacation around a stinkin card show?!" "ugh... no its like... a coincidence or something... honest, i just like... saw it in the paper and stuff..." HEHEHEHE
Here is your laynce nix 2002 heritage. Hopefully this guy didn't hold it when it peaked at $35. Only 99 cents, no bids yet, and he eats the grading fees too!!

The SPs are regular cards in the sets. Heritage has about 100 cards toward then end of the set as well as many superstar cards throughtout the rest of the set. Some of them there are just 2 versions of the card one being very hard to find and the other not so hard. The 2004 Todd Helton purple version comes to mind as extremely hard to find from last years Heritage set. These are generally inserted 1 on every 4 packs. Last year common SPs immediatly were able to be sold for 3.00 to 4.00 each, some stars were hitting 10 to 12 each. They have settled some, but are still good sellers.
What made last years Heritge fun was the first wave of retail packs were loaded some packs containing 2 or 3 SPs. The retail always dries up very quickly.
The basic set is a set builders dream it is not impossible to put together but does present a challenge not found in many modern sets and holds its value well.
I am in Texarkana.

Every year..I end up putting a master set together (minus GU and autos)..then end up selling it when the price is at its highest. I will probably do the same thing this year. If one wants a master set of base, SP and inserts...logically it makes sense to buy them a year or two afterwards...but its not as much fun.
I ran out of gum sometime back....so I will need to restock!
I would love to do trades (regular SP for regular SP, base cards for base cards, inserts for inserts, etc.) with you guys so that we can keep the cost of our investment down.
