Am I paranoid, or are these the same draped bust quarter?

Here's one that's been on Jade's website awhile:

1805 #1

And here's one now on eBay:

1805 #2

Clearly the eBayer's grade is way optomistic, and maybe he bought from Jade and inflated the old grade. Or maybe they're totally different coins with the same weird pin holes and assorted other marks. Maybe Dennis knows. Maybe I'm paranoid.

Thoughts?

I would be very surpised if they were not the same coin in both pictures

  • They might be the same.If you look at the bust line between the 8 and the 0 you will see a little white spot and that white spot is on the two coins in the same spot.

On the obverse look at the rim ding at 4 o'clock that Jade Rare Coins mentions. On the reverse look at the 5 "Pin Marks" on and near the 2 of 25C. Also the wear patterns are the same. I have no doubt it is the same coin. Interesting how the grade jumped from VG10 to VF20.

The five dots on the reverse (at about 7-o'clock) are a dead giveaway that hey are indeed the same coin.

Apparentely Jade undergrades his coins!!! image

    Joe.

  • Yes, that is one of our "ex-coins". We sold it at the Houston Money Show last week. Sure didn't take very long to make it to eBay. I still contend that it is a VG coin (due to damage), but it is a nice example nonetheless. If you know and understand draped bust quarters, then you can appreciate a coin like this example for what it is.

BTW varlis, we picked up some really nice draped bust and capped bust quarters at the show. They will replace some of the old inventory items on our web site soon.

  • <<<READ BEFORE YOU BID

My opinion on grades are just that my opinion do not bid on my grade bid on yours!!!!>>>

VF!!! What a load. I hope nobody buys that as a VF. His statement in the description that I quoted here is the kind that I appreciate from a person honestly trying to grade fairly. But from this guy... yuk! image Let me re-phrase this guys words for you all. LOOK HERE I AM ABOUT TO RAPE YOU AND I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE ABLE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT LATER. My opinion on grades is inflated and completely worthless. Unless you want to just open your wallet and give me all of your money you better grade it yourself!!!!

When I grade my coins. I spend a stupid amount of time studying the coin, I disclose upfront any problems I see, and if there are problems I'll detail grade it, then net grade it. I realize it may cost me some money, but I can't live with myself otherwise. Last week I sold a couple dozen Seated Dimes. They almost all had some kind of small problem. (I upgraded them out of my set.) Now, anyone opening them up at home I believe will say to themselves. Yep, this coin has this or that... But it is what he said it was... and yep, his pic showed it. Actually it's a little better than he said. Now, if they open one up and say... Nuts, this coin has a scratch. They look at the listing and see it was disclosed and pictured but they're bummed, because they didn't notice it when they bid, they contact me unhappy... then I take it back, and full refund is given - less shipping.

I don't advertise a refund policy like that because ebaying is just too damn much work to be an on-approval service. I spent over 8 hours carefully packaging coins and going to the post office on Monday. It can be a lot of work...

  • 8 hours packing and shipping? How many do you sell a week?

  • Just slow I guess. I closed on 35 lots on Saturday... I print out an invoice, print a label, send the guy an email telling him I received payment and that the coin is being sent. I save the payment email on my hard drive. I package the coin into a piece of cardboard cut and folded to cover the coin on both sides. I put the coin and the invoice in a padded mailer. Return address label, the guys address label, seal the mailer, tape the sealed side, fill out the blue insured slips, attach them to the mailer, weigh and affix postage to any that didn't choose to insure. Haul the whole pile to the post office, stand in line, mail them and come home. Doesn't seem like a lot while you're doing it, but it adds up.

Also on Monday I had to package in a box with peanuts, capital plastic holders. I also had to send one coin registered-insured, which I hate cause it takes me forever fooling around with that register tape junk. -Kurt-

Yeah, the VF-20 grade on the eBay auction was what startled me at first, then I remembered those pin holes from the picture on Jade's site.
If you bid on this coin, don't pay VF money.

If Jade will let us know what he sold it for, maybe one of us could rip it from "TuesdaynightATcoins" for less! image

I don't recall what it was sold for. Andy wrote the ticket on that sale, but I remember the guy who bought it. He spent A LOT of money at our table. Most of you know that I don't give dealer discounts, so he paid "real money" for the coin. My coins are priced on the flip and there's little discount room in the stated prices. I could look up what he paid via the invoice, but it would not be right to publish that cost, for obvious reasons.

Then I'll assume it was close to the website price.

Very interesting thread. I wonder how many times a coin quickly goes on ebay once it is bought.
