Attention photo people! What's the special process to photograph the entire edge of a coin?

In the latest CoinValues there's an article showing Liberty Nickels with the edge photographed in a continuous circle and "attached" to
the coin. It's like the edge was folded up the entire way around so all of it can be viewed at the same time as the obverse.

How's that done??? image

I bet a 270 Degree curved mirror would work.

Or if you had a convex mirror with the coin on the apex.. no... how about a concave mirro with the coin in the center the edges would be shown.. sounds too hard though.

There must be an easier way

  • The inside reflector of a flashlight. The coin is placed in there (after you take out the lightbulb) and you can see the whole rim of the coin. I learned that trick at the Digital Protography course at the ANA Summer Seminar last year. Its cool and works well.

What Cammie just said. I've never tried it myself but I've seen several photos taken with the technique.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Brilliant! I'm mad that I didn't figure it out myself! I'm going to try it.
