you can get lucky on ebay:post your successful purchases

I got this type I slq a while back on ebay. The auction came with a reasonable photo, and "something" just told me it was right. I got lucky. No evidence of hairlines even though it was lightly dipped along time ago. The photo I have is slightly overexposed but it reasonably shows a nice, lustrous au58 coin that I purchased for au53 price. Are there similar stories out there in forumland?

My best purchase was an 1878 3CN NGC PF65 that has lightly toning an irridescent blue. It's gorgeous and has some frosting; maybe even a cameo candidate. The picture was horrible of the coin, but you could see it looked like a legitimate slab and I only paid wholesale PF64 price at the time:

    Nice Star Trek score tlhoy!

I got my 65 deg. rotated dies MD Quarter on ebay. I purchased a broken collector set of 5 MD quarters that had a colorized, a gold plated, a two-tone, a clad unc. and a silver unc. for a cost of $4 + $3 shipping. When it arrived, I was PO'd because it was actually just a P & D clad and no silver (the pics were really bad). When I took them out of the holder, I made the discovery. That's my best luck so far. It's in a PCGS slab now - MS64 Mint Error.

However, I bought a 1942 "doubled die" (as listed) dime using BIN for $7. Sure enough, I am 90% certain that it's a 42/1 D, condition is about VG. I sent it to ANACS in Nov for verification on the economy slow boat. I'll post it if it comes back a winner.

I've seen the whole set sell for $375 to $550

It was a 1 day auction that ended around 3 AM (CST) on a weekday morning.
With 1 minute left I bid $400 & it ended at $102, I was shocked. I immediately paid for it, but I expected they would back out of the sale. They didn't.image

My best one was a 1881-S Morgan dollar that I paid $38.00 on ebay. PCGS graded it as MS66 DMPL. image

My icon coin was nabbed on Ebay. It was part of a 19 coin Barber half group I paid $220.00 or so. The scan was small, and I could tell one was a real winner despite the puny scan. all the other coins were AG-G with two fines which I sold off for $151.00. Making my icon coin a net $69.00 purchase.

P.S. If you look closely you can see raised die cracks lines on the bust and through the stars...Just awesome!

I really like the porousity of that coin. Gives it an interesting look.

I haven't been spending as much time on eBay as I used to, but the finds are still out there, despite all the swill through which one has to wade. My most recent find was advertised as an ungraded 1913 dime. It turned out to be an 1898 in AU with dark toning and an "extra leaf" die chip on the reverse corn, which I quickly resold to a Barber Dime variety collector.

I bought this morgan (1881-S) on ebay for $34 plus shipping. PCGS just posted the grade yesterday and they say it's an MS66.

My best (and biggest) eBay pickup was this one last July, won for less than what was VF-20 money at the time. Not a huge rip in percentage terms, but a nice coin for $300-$400 less than what it was worth at the time:

  • I once purchased a set of almost new studded snow tires and alloy rims
for my car, total cost was $250 (shipped). The rims alone would normally
    go for $250 each.

I saw a 1925 S Lincoln listed as "in very good condition" with a small picture. But for a small picture it was clear and sharp, and I could see a bit of coppoer color shining under Lincolns shoulder. So I laid down my $5 and won. It came back from the slabber at MS 65 Brown. I sold it for $172.

Right now I have a 1936 Proof Lincoln at ANACS I picked up over Thanksgiving while things were slow. I took a chance for $81 as it was in a NNC Holder as 65 Brown.

Well, it sure looks great, no marks on the obv, but a nice deep purple color on the obv with some small blotching on the rev. MS 65?, probably not...But even if it comes back as MS 61, I broke even. I will let you know when it returns.

  • I've had a few nice buys on E-Bay. I was looking for a 1/10th oz. Platinum coin for my element collection but wanted a BIN so I didn't have to wait too long. As I'm going through the listings, I come across a BIN for $70. It was for a Chinese Panda. I figured it was for a 1/20th oz. piece, but I decided to take a look. Nope. It was for a 1/10th oz. coin. I immediately clicked the BIN and paid right away. The next day, the guy e-mails me and says 'Thank you for the instant payment. You got a good bargain here. I meant to put the BIN at $170 but forgot the 1 in front. I'm a man of my word so I'll still ship out the coin. Congrats!" I was shocked. It was a nice find.

Another nice buy on E-Bay was for some pure Rhodium metal. A guy had what he called a 10-gram piece of pure Rhodium metal for sale with a Specification sheet to show the purity. The auction was ending in about an hour so I decided to put in my $200 bid. (At this point in time, Rh was going for about 800 an ounce). I put in my bid and won the auction for about $190. Just a few weeks later and the price of Rhodium nearly doubled. Even better is that when the CoA came with the Rhodium, it said that the total mass of the sample was 11.56 grams. I had a scientist friend of mine weight it on their analytical balances and sure enough, it was 11.5-something grams. So I actually got more than 10 grams worth. With the price of Rhodium where it is now, that 11.5+ gram piece is worth more than double what I paid for it. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.
