MrsSpuds Merc Find - Is it FB???

MrSpudMrSpud Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭
MrsSpud picked up a partial set of circulated Mercury dimes in a Whitman folder the other day for basically the price of melt. Most of the coins were in fine condition, but surprisingly the 1917S looked pretty good. We popped it out of the folder and were shocked. It appears to be slighty tattered but uncirculated with decent looking bands. Could these bands be strong enough to be considered FB?

Looks like the center is split... so I'd say yes.

That said, MrsSpud is kicking your ass with finding stuff lately image

Looks like MrsSpud did good. From the picture it looks like it'd go Choice AU/low Unc and those bands look like they could go full.

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

Dang, that's a nice cherrypick for a bulk purchase!

I'd say it's a close call, based on the very center of the center bands.

I would also say it's a close call, for the same reason as XpipedreamR.

Yeah, they give her better discounts too. From now on she needs to go to the coin store without me more often...image

If the coin doesn't go MS they wouldn't even consider FB designation at PCGS as they will only (now) place FB on MS 60+ coins.

This 17-S wouldn't go FB anyway. Check out the 27-D in this thread...and it (as expected) didn't go FB --> Link to Merc thread

They are much more conservative for FB designation on earlier date Mercs too -- FYI.

Nice coin though, and a great find image
