Heritage REALLY ought to take better pictures

For such a successful operation they sure do take bad pix.

  • We know. But there are bargains to be had in the auctions because sometimes the images don't look as good as the coins do.

I have, as most of you have too, bought coins that looked...."OK" and was pleasantly surprised when

they arrived but now the situation is reversed and I have some PQ White coins up for auction and

let's just say that the pix do not do these coins any justice. For the benefit of all that buy and sell

there they REALLY need to address this "situation".image

If I were you, I'd use that little sig line to list the auction and lot numbers for all CU readers to see! image

The other dasy somebody suggested that Heritage should hire CosmicDebris at double his present salary to photograph coins for them.

True, but I suppose there is something to underpromising and overdelivering that keeps people coming back.

Then again I have gotten coins from Heritage that were even crappier than the pics!! BTW if that was French would it be crap e ay instead of crapp e er?

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

I have no desire to SPAM. If you'd like more details see thread in BS&T. If that doesn't get it either PM me or email me ( listed under profile) and I'll be more than happy to give you the lot numbers and more inside info.

Well this has been an ongoing topic on these boards for a long time and its not likely to be changed. I would say that many coins bring strong money in spite of the pix. Your best bet then is not to use Heritage or require them to use your pix if possible.

I just got an email from Heritage:

"Coin News......The Dr. Volker Dube Collection"

Thought it might be Boom's coins, until I saw they were Morgans. image

Dr. Dube.....heh, heh, heh.....he said Dube.

At times Heritage has provided some of the best coin images I've ever seen on the net. Their best recent photos were of the JFS commems from the ANA sale in August. These may have been done by an outside source. Whoever did them did a fantastic job. Here's just one example:

    image

What bothers me most about their imaging is the inconsistency. Aside from the JFS collection and a few other notable collections, their imaging was better in 2001-02 than it is now -- as an avid Heritage archive user I've found their best pics taken a few years ago. To me this says two things: coin photography isn't one of their priorities, and they've been trying all sorts of methods without a clue of what works and what doesn't.

Well Greg Rohan did reply here on some other concerns. Perhaps an email to him will bring a response.

Paul, maybe it's just me but that image looks washed out to me with almost no luster.

They do much better with silver than copper. I don't trust their copper pictures enouh to buy anything from them. They have a lot of coins that would probably make me happy, but I won't take the chance on a bad picture.

What's their return policy these days? I know with Teletrade's new return policy and pictures I haven't bid on a Teletrade auction for over a year.
