I'm a newb and still learning so don't take this the wrong way...

To me the coin looks like its been harshly dipped...its got that dull, gray washout effect going on.

I'd be interested to hear why previous posters commented that it was nice...is it just because of the toning?

Of course the above has nothing to do with anything. You liked the coin and you bought it, which is all that matters. I too buy coins because I like the looks of them but I would have passed on this one.

That can sometimes be an effect of the lighting, too.

Looks OK to me, but I'm no expert on Washingtons (or, for that matter, spotting NT versus AT).
