Is this 1900-O a VAM 23?

This is my first shake at trying to do some VAM'ing. So, please excuse me if I'm a bit off. I cannot be certain if this is considered a "slanted date" but the "1" does appear closer to the rim than the last "0". Or, in order to qualify, does the "1" have to be significantly closer? Any examples? Also, what would you grade this coin? Why do some silver (and other coin alloys for that matter) get this kind of dark color; is it just from some sort of toning or something else? Thanks.

I'd grade it VF, unsure about the VAM but I'll check my book.

It is a low end VF20 not sure about the VAM23

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I don't have my books with me. I see what you mean about the slanted date. I have slanted date VAMs from other years/mints, and they have a little more of a slant. The date looks like a "near date" to me.

Also, hypothetically, if I were to put a price tag of $12 on a regular 1900-O, would I be able to put any premium on this one of an extra: fifty cents, one dollar, or ???

By any chance, has can anyone confirm if I'm on the right track? I've spent three nights VAM'ing about 2 1/2 rolls of dollars. Not much coming out of it (although, I've found a a couple with some interest). I discovered that if the coin is pretty well worn, many of the diagnostics are pretty much impossible to tell.

It appears that the site that's hosting my pictures is down for the moment. Hopefully, it will be back soon; if not I'll "ttt" the thread when I know it's back up for sure.

I reall just can not tell about the VAM 23. The photo in the book looks quite a bit like your closeup of the date.

To answer your question, I doubt this would command a significant premium over common value. The O/CC VAMs are the big premium coins in 1900 New Orleans.

Keep on VAMing you will find something exciting.
